In relation to middle grade schools, 20 countries outperformed the United States in mathematics and nine countries scored above the U.S. in science. The intent of this volume of The Handbook of Research in Middle Level Education, An International Look at Educating Young Adolescents, is to broaden our understanding of middle grade schooling by critically examining the education of young adolescents (ages 10-15, typically grades 6-8) through an international lens. Pesquisas demonstram que tanto as estratégias de aprendizagem quanto as atribuiçôes de causalidade desempenham um importante papel no rendimento escolar do estudante. Os objetivos deste estudo foram de investigar o uso de estratégias de aprendizagem e as atribuições de causalidade para sucesso e fracasso escolar de alunos do ensino fundamental, suas relações com a idade e a série escolar, o gênero e a repetência, bem como pesquisar a relação entre o uso de estratégias de aprendizagem e as atribuições de causalidade para sucesso e fracasso escolar dos participantes. Os dados foram coletados mediante uma entrevista individual estruturada. Resultados revelaram que tanto as estratégias de aprendizagem, quanto as atribuições de causalidade foram mais siginificativamente relacionadas à idade e à série escolar. Relações significativas também foram encontradas entre a menção de almmas estratépas de aprendizagem e as atribuições de causalidade para sucesso e fracasso escolar dos participantes. Os dados são discutidos em termos da necessidade de se proporcionar aos estudantes um ensino mais efetivo, contemplando a instrução em estratégias de aprendizagem e atribuições de causalidade de modo a favorecer o desenvolvimento da motivação adequada e da auto-regulação da aprendizagem.
