The debate about the fake news is now rejoined by two factors: rise of protagonists outside the field of politics who now dominate the publicized media space and the role of social networks and the Internet that vie for journalism to its old communicational and informative centrality. Recent studies have also shown that in the current digital environment marked by the influence of social networks, it is through Facebook that the most information traffic is verified, although the so-called "hard news" circulate preferentially through Twitter. This means a profound change also in the way the policy communicates and gains a renewed centrality. Populism and the construction of post-truths were breaking new ground for affirmation, challenging democracy and the exercise of rigorous, demanding and enlightened information. Researchers from a dozen Portuguese and Brazilian universities observe and reflect, in a transdisciplinary way, about these new phenomena, seeking to analyze causes and consequences, while presenting case studies and proposing solutions.

Despite predictions of the "death of the past" and the "end of history," the past refuses to go away. In fact, the start of the twenty-first century has seen an upsurge of interest in popular representations of history on the large and small screen, and of impassioned political conflicts over rival understandings of the past. Historical responsibility and apology have become contentious topics of domestic politics and of international diplomatic relations, and memory a profitable commodity for sale to mass markets. Against this background, how do historians deal with the problems of the search for "historical truth"? The Past Within Us approaches these issues by examining the problems of representing history in the popular media. Drawing on examples from East Asian and American as well as European history, it poses the question: What happens when accounts of history are transferred from one medium to another? How far does the medium shape the message? How can historians deploy contemporary media in ways which evoke and develop the historical imagination? From the romances of Walter Scott to Steven Spielberg blockbusters, from online Irish nationalism to Japanese revisionist comic books, The Past Within Us explores some of the more dramatic modern popular representations and reflects on the key challenges and possibilities for the communication of history in a multimedia age.

Post Truth written by Matthew d'Ancona and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-11 with Political Science categories.

Welcome to the Post-Truth era— a time in which the art of the lie is shaking the very foundations of democracy and the world as we know it. The Brexit vote; Donald Trump’s victory; the rejection of climate change science; the vilification of immigrants; all have been based on the power to evoke feelings and not facts. So what does it all mean and how can we champion truth in in a time of lies and ‘alternative facts’? In this eye-opening and timely book, Post-Truth is distinguished from a long tradition of political lies, exaggeration and spin. What is new is not the mendacity of politicians but the public’s response to it and the ability of new technologies and social media to manipulate, polarise and entrench opinion. Where trust has evaporated, conspiracy theories thrive, the authority of the media wilt and emotions matter more than facts . Now, one of the UK’s most respected political journalists, Matthew d’Ancona investigates how we got here, why quiet resignation is not an option and how we can and must fight back.

Carey's lively thought, lucid style, and profound scholarship propel the reader through a wide and varied intellectual landscape, particularly as these issues have affected Modern American thought. New perspectives on the misinformation ecosystem that is the production and circulation of fake news. What is fake news? Is it an item on Breitbart, an article in The Onion, an outright falsehood disseminated via Russian bot, or a catchphrase used by a politician to discredit a story he doesn't like? This book examines the real fake news: the constant flow of purposefully crafted, sensational, emotionally charged, misleading or totally fabricated information that mimics the form of mainstream news. Rather than viewing fake news through a single lens, the book maps the various kinds of misinformation through several different disciplinary perspectives, taking into account the overlapping contexts of politics, technology, and journalism. The contributors consider topics including fake news as “disorganized” propaganda; folkloric falsehood in the “Pizzagate” conspiracy; native advertising as counterfeit news; the limitations of regulatory reform and technological solutionism; Reddit's enabling of fake news; the psychological mechanisms by which people make sense of information; and the evolution of fake news in America. A section on media hoaxes and satire features an oral history of and an interview with prankster-activists the Yes Men, famous for parodies that reveal hidden truths. Finally, contributors consider possible solutions to the complex problem of fake news—ways to mitigate its spread, to teach students to find factually accurate information, and to go beyond fact-checking. Contributors Mark Andrejevic, Benjamin Burroughs, Nicholas Bowman, Mark Brewin, Elizabeth Cohen, Colin Doty, Dan Faltesek, Johan Farkas, Cherian George, Tarleton Gillespie, Dawn R. Brexit Trump And The Media written by John Mair and has been published by Theschoolbook.com this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-23 with Business & Economics categories.

Edited by John Mair, Tor Clark, Neil Fowler, Raymond Snoddy and Richard Tait They were the two volcanic surprises in world politics in 2016 - Brexit, the UK vote to leave the European Union in June, and the election of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States in November. Neither was predicted by the polls, neither pleased the establishment in both countries. Both will have long-term ramifications, good and bad, for decades to come. But what role did the media on both sides of the Atlantic play as midwives to these 'populist' revolts? Was it wary enough? Did the media, in all its various forms, act as watchdog or lapdog? With the 2017 UK General Election results fresh in our minds, this is a timely and cogent analysis of how we arrived at where we are. This book - the 20th in the acclaimed Abramis 'hackademic' series (mixing academics and journalists between the same covers) attempts to answer those big questions and more. The contributors include some of journalism and academia's most distinguished names, from the introduction by Channel 4's Jon Snow through to the postscript by the BBC's Nick Robinson.
