Offers illuminating essays by passionate and well-recognized American Catholic intellectuals on the interaction between faith and work. By envisioning Catholicism as a cultural force that shapes morality, the arts, creativity, cultural conversation, social justice, spirituality and vocation, the authors invite educational leaders and intellectuals to take seriously their holy work -- of teaching others how to understand and engage the world from a Catholic perspective. Stemming from nearly a decade of conferences sponsored by Collegium, a consortium of sixty Catholic colleges and universities, this book offers new ways of connecting the content and concerns of Catholic faith to intellectual life across academic disciplines. This book helps form a community of inquiry around the issues central to Catholic intellectual enterprise.

Leaven in the World is geared to young people (j venes) eighteen years or older who have a faith commitment and a minimum of two years' experience as members of a small community. The manual helps j venes make their community life more meaningful, take responsibility for their community's maturation, and prepare themselves to create new small communities. J venes are given the necessary elements for analyzing their community life through formation-in-action, personal and community prayer, and study of the New Testament, especially the Acts of the Apostles. They thus discover how to integrate what they learn into their daily life as a community called to be leaven in the world.

The kingdom of heaven is like leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till it was all leavened. —Matthew 13:33 How can we be part of the kingdom of heaven here and now and spread it to others, like leaven causing a lump of dough to rise and expand? Just look at the lives of the saints. Over the past two millennia, the Church has recognized thousands of men and women who have loved and imitated Christ so wholeheartedly that they transformed the world around them—as they were transformed themselves. The saints have come from every background, people, and era. They have been rich and poor, healthy and sick, single and married, members of the clergy and of the laity. The Leaven of the Saints groups them according to the kind of Christian witness they have given the world—as martyrs, Fathers and Doctors of the Church, priests and religious, popes and bishops, national heroes, founders of religious orders, married persons, and more. The vastness of this work reveals an important truth: that each saint is a unique individual with a unique mission to grow in the knowledge and love of Christ and to make him better known and loved in the world.

A Study Guide Based on the Award-Winning Novel Come to Me Are you sold out for Christ? Would you do anything He asks you to do? Many people believe they are living fully surrendered lives to God, but when the worries of this world start to crowd in, they cry out in frustration and anger instead of bowing before Him and saying, "Thy will be done." But what does Jesus say about this? How did He lay down His life so willingly? By following the lives of Jesus, His Mother Mary, and the apostles, we can discover what true surrender is all about. Based on the award-winning novel Come to Me, Learning from the Master follows the life of Christ from birth to resurrection. Each chapter in the study will take you through the book Come to Me, giving you the opportunity to know Jesus in an intimate setting as He interacts with His family and friends. From there, the study takes the reader through various topics such as faith, family, trust, doubt, and even wilderness experiences. In addition, other topics of discussion include the significance of the Bethlehem star, the last supper, and of course the resurrection. With over twenty topics of discussion, Learning from the Master: Living a Surrendered Life is ideal for your ladies bible study group, or for private study. Each topic leaves the reader with a clear understanding of how to live a fully surrendered life.

Excerpt from The Leaven at Work: Or, Some of the Concessions of Orthodoxy, in the Direction of Universalism This volume contains material illustrative of the reformation - revolution rather that the now departing century has experienced and is experiencing in religious thought and Opinion relative to human destiny. The Reformation of Luther left untouched the fundamental errors of the mediaeval creeds, but it opened the flood-gates of light, and prepared the minds of men for the reformation of the Reformation, for the perception and reception of forgotten truths. Those truths are contained in germ in an accurate view of the Divine character, which necessitates the essentials of a genuine Christianity. When the first promulgators of Universalism as a distinct system, in its modernre-discovery, had reached the correct view of God as a Father, and discarded the idea then prevalent that he is a mere governor and executioner, they not only gave the world the germ of a new theodicy, but they deposited in the heart of Christendom an influence destined to give a new direction to all the currents of its life, a divine leaven whose fermentation was to transform, reform the beliefs of the Christian world. Already the most marvellous improvement has taken place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Leaven of the Kingdom of God, or Christianity Leavening Common Life and Conversation: A Sermon By forgetting these fundamental truths men have learnt contentedly to leave their common life unblest. Their opinions and ways of thinking and feeling on common subjects are lighted with no Heavenly light. Human life and the world, and its marriages, births, deaths, politics, daily joys and sorrows, are thought to have become, by a melancholy necessity, in their very nature, low earthly things, which cannot be made beautiful or heavenly, nor salted with any salt to keep them from cor ruption. Angels who live in Heaven may, they think, he like G01), and so may we, if we can become like angels, and separate from the earth but so long as we are engaged in earthly cares and thoughts we must be of the earth earthy - not made in Gon's image at all. This is to forget that great truth taught us at this season (christmas -the truth namely, that the son or Goo lived a common man's life, for the very purpose of show ing how the fulness of the Godhead may shine through the whole of it, and make birth, and marriage, and death, and every thing, beautiful and heavenly - as Goo is willing always to make them. In the following Sermon I have endeavoured to point out a test or means of self-examination, by the use of which we may discover how far this has been the case with us, and how far our habitual opinions and feelings are leavened with Christian leaven.
