2022 Catholic Media Association second place award in theology: morality, ethics, Christology, Mariology, and redemption For some decades, the work of Carmelite theologian Constance FitzGerald, OCD, has been a well-known secret, not only among students and practitioners of Carmelite spirituality, but also among spiritual directors, spiritual writers, retreatants, vowed religious women and men, and Christian theologians. This collection sets out to introduce the work of Sister Constance to a wider and more diverse audience–women and men who seek to strengthen themselves on the spiritual journey, who yearn to deepen personal or scholarly theological and religious reflection, and who want to make sense of the times in which we live. To this end, this volume curates seven of Sister Constance’s articles with probing and responsive essays written by ten theologians. Contributors include: Susie Paulik Babka Colette Ackerman, OCD Roberto S. Goizueta Margaret R. Pfeil Alex Milkulich Andrew Prevot Laurie Cassidy Maria Teresa Morgan Bryan N. Massingale M. Unlike Paul’s other letters, this one is not addressed to particular churches or individuals, with their own needs and problems (even “Ephesians” is not in all the early copies). It is a circular despatch, covering general matters of belief (chapters 1–3) and behaviour (chapters 4–6), applicable to all churches and Christians everywhere. It is one of the clearest statements in the New Testament of God’s purpose in saving us and is as practically challenging as it is spiritually inspiring. Perhaps that is why it is such a popular choice for preachers.

Justified by faith are the three words that capture the ministry and work of Martin Luther (14831546) and Charles Haddon Spurgeon (183492). For Spurgeon, one sentence produced the reformation, and it would be the main theme of his pastoral ministry from 1851 to 1892: But the just shall live by his faith. The Just Shall Live by His Faith compiles a series of Charles Spurgeons sermons on justification by faith, Martin Luther, and the Reformation, and it covers the vital subjects of faith as the life and force in believers who have accepted the saving merits of the Lord Jesus Christ as the means of salvation. For such believers, the goal is to live their lives as they walk with the Spirit, and by dwelling on Spurgeons sermons we can learn that the lesson of the just living by faith will be the one seed that will germinate into the gift of justification, as if you have never sinned; this seed will continue to grow and lead to the Spirit-enabled transformation of human hearts. Spurgeons sermons on justification by faith echo the apostle Pauls most prominent teachings, and this doctrine still rings true today as the test of Christs church. All believers will be inspired by Spurgeons sermons to look to Christ for salvation, live by faith in every part of their lives, and have peace with God.

From the pen of Charles Spurgeon:This year we will gather heavenly fruit on earthly ground, where faith and hope have turned the desert into the Lord’s garden. If “men ate the bread of angels” (Ps. 78:25) long ago, why not today? May God grant us the grace to feed on Jesus, and thereby eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan this year!Whether you are familiar with the works of this classic Christian author or discovering him for the first time, Look Unto Me offers a treasury of spiritual insight and inspiration. Charles Haddon Spurgeon was known as the Prince of Preachers, stirring audiences from his London pulpit from 1854 to 1892. Millions more who never heard him preach read his weekly sermons. Based on Spurgeon’s original devotional, Morning by Morning, Look Unto Me has now been edited for the modern reader with updated language and additional application commentary by bestselling author, Jim Reimann. Look Unto Me offers 366 of Spurgeon’s most powerful devotions, modernizing the language without changing the meaning and adding Scripture references and quotes in the NIV. Jim Reimann, editor of updated editions of Streams in the Desert and My Utmost for His Highest, has also added thought-provoking comments to deepen your understanding of the text, other Scriptures to consider, as well as application and closing prayers. This new edition also includes these new features:• Scripture quotes referenced in the context of each devotion• Scripture and subject indexes• Hymn quotes referenced with composer names and datesThe material is profound, thought-provoking, and life-changing, but easy to follow. Of the imitation of Christ, and of contempt of the world and all its vanities He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, saith the Lord. These are the words of Christ; and they teach us how far we must imitate His life and character, if we seek true illumination, and deliverance from all blindness of heart. Let it be our most earnest study, therefore, to dwell upon the life of Jesus Christ. His teaching surpasseth all teaching of holy men, and such as have His Spirit find therein the hidden manna. But there are many who, though they frequently hear the Gospel, yet feel but little longing after it, because they have not the mind of Christ. He, therefore, that will fully and with true wisdom understand the words of Christ, let him strive to conform his whole life to that mind of Christ. What doth it profit thee to enter into deep discussion concerning the Holy Trinity, if thou lack humility, and be thus displeasing to the Trinity? For verily it is not deep words that make a man holy and upright; it is a good life which maketh a man dear to God. I had rather feel contrition than be skilful in the definition thereof. If thou knewest the whole Bible, and the sayings of all the philosophers, what should all this profit thee without the love and grace of God? Vanity of vanities, all is vanity, save to love God, and Him only to serve. That is the highest wisdom, to cast the world behind us, and to reach forward to the heavenly kingdom. It is vanity then to seek after, and to trust in, the riches that shall perish. It is vanity, too, to covet honours, and to lift up ourselves on high. It is vanity to follow the desires of the flesh and be led by them, for this shall bring misery at the last. It is vanity to desire a long life, and to have little care for a good life. It is vanity to take thought only for the life which now is, and not to look forward to the things which shall be hereafter. It is vanity to love that which quickly passeth away, and not to hasten where eternal joy abideth. Be ofttimes mindful of the saying, The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear with hearing. Strive, therefore, to turn away thy heart from the love of the things that are seen, and to set it upon the things that are not seen. For they who follow after their own fleshly lusts, defile the conscience, and destroy the grace of God.
