Kajian saintifik tentang sifat-sifat bahan adalah penting untuk penambahbaikan dan penggunaan bahan tersebut. Satu aspek yang penting dalam sains bahan adalah pengetahuan dan pemahaman pada peringkat mikroskopik yang melibatkan kesan kuantum terutama bagi bahan bersaiz nanometer yang sifatnya berbeza dengan dalam keadaan pukal. Jenis alat dan kaedah yang digunakan untuk mengkaji sifat bahan pada peringkat subatom bergantung kepada ciri-ciri yang dikaji. Kaedah eksperimen putaran/ santaian/resonan spin muon (µSR) dan sains pengkomputeran boleh digandingkan untuk mengkaji pelbagai aspek bahan pada peringkat elektron seperti struktur elektron, magnetisma, angkutan elektron, kecacatan titik dan dinamik spin. Muon (µ) adalah satu zarah asas yang tidak stabil dengan spin ½ dan jangka hayat 2.2 µs. Ada dua jenis zarah muon, satu positif (µ+) dan satu negatif (µ–). Secara teknikal, muon merujuk µ– manakala µ+ dipanggil antimuon. Penggunaan zarah antimuon sebagai prob untuk sifat bahan adalah teknik yang sangat berkesan. Teknik µSR telah berjaya digunakan untuk memahami pelbagai sifat bahan yang sukar untuk dikaji dengan teknik lain kerana apabila antimuon masuk ke dalam bahan ini, ia akan menawan satu elektron lantas membentuk muonium (Mu). Sifat kimia Mu adalah hampir sama dengan H dan dianggap sebagai satu radiosotop hidrogen dan kajian boleh dijalankan dengan satu sistem bendasing yang sangat cair. Walau bagaimanapun, kedudukan antimuon tidak dapat diketahui secara eksperimen, namun diperlukan untuk menganalisis dan memahami keputusan µSR. Dalam hal ini, sains pengkomputeran dengan kaedah seperti Teori Ketumpatan Fungsian (DFT) adalah satu cara yang efektif untuk menentukan lokasi muon di dalam bahan. Salah satu kekuatan teknik gandingan µSR dan pengiraan prinsip pertama adalah untuk mengkaji bahan dengan sifat magnetisma yang lemah seperti magnet organik. Satu perbezaan utama bahan ini dengan magnet konvensional adalah spin tak perpasangan dalam magnet organik tidak setempat pada sesuatu atom tetapi teragih pada keselurahan molekul. Struktur penertiban magnetik juga tidak dapat ditentukan secara eksperimen. Penggunaan teknik µSR telah dapat mengesahkan kewujudan penertiban antiferomagnet dalam bahan magnet organik. Kajian prinsip pertama DFT pula telah berjaya menunjukkan sifat-sifat ganjil taburan ketumpatan cas dan juga struktur penertiban antiferomagnet. Keputusan pengiraan DFT juga menunjukkan bahawa keadaan antiferomagnet adalah keadaan dasar bagi bahan ini dan struktur magnetik jarak jauh adalah dalam dua dimensi. Teknik µSR dan DFT juga telah digunakan untuk mengkaji sifat-sifat bahan dalam kategori sains hayat seperti protein dan DNA. Angkutan elektron dalam DNA merupakan satu fenomena asasi dan perubahan dalam ciri angkutan yang disebabkan oleh kerosakan pada molekul DNA mempunyai kaitan dengan beberapa jenis penyakit. Topologi angkutan dan mobiliti elektron dalam pelbagai bentuk molekul DNA boleh dikaji dengan µSR dan menggunakan molekul sintetik. Interaksi hiperhalus boleh dicerap dan boleh dibandingkan dengan dapatan daripada pengiraan DFT. Kajian saintifik dengan gandingan teknik µSR dan DFT telah terbukti mampu menyerlahkan banyak sifat-sifat bahan pada peringkat subatom. Pemahaman asasi pada peringkat subatom sangat penting terutamanya untuk bahan-bahan bukan konvensional dan juga yang bersaiz nanometer. Teknik ini yang biasanya digunakan dalam bidang fizik dan kimia juga berpotensi untuk diaplikasikan dalam bidang sains hayat dengan lebih meluas.
