El general de las causas perdidas. Nunca triunfador, jamás vencido, Ángel Peñaloza pelea por los suyos largas campañas que no puede ganar. Combate junto a jefes prestigiosos: Quiroga, Lavalle, Benavides, Urquiza. Enfrenta, lanza en mano, a los gobernadores porteños más poderosos del siglo: Juan Manuel de Rosas y Bartolomé Mitre. Ambos siguen contra él persecuciones de exterminio. Todos, aún sus enemigos, reconocen en Peñaloza un hombre de bien. Nadie lo acusa de haber torturado ni ejecutado a los vencidos en tiempos que todos lo hacían. Sarmiento y Hernández, las dos grandes plumas del siglo XIX, dedican sus propias biografías al Peñaloza. Hernández ve en Chacho “uno de los caudillos más prestigiosos, más generosos y valientes, que ha tenido la República Argentina”. Hasta Sarmiento, su adversario implacable, termina admitiendo que “alguna cualidad verdaderamente grande debía de haber en el carácter de aquel viejo gaucho”. Las guerras del Chacho remontan a valores, creencias y costumbres de una época ya lejana. Un mundo sin telégrafos, trenes, ni rutas transitables. Un tiempo en que la Argentina interior se ve sometida a la tensión del mayor cambio político, económico, demográfico, cultural e institucional de su historia.
