A novel that deals with an extremely sensitive and topical issue: Teen prostitution, coercive or voluntary. It talks almost exclusively about the coercive form of the phenomenon; rightly so since it is the dramatic part and involves very young, unwitting victims, and must be opposed with all our might. However, we must not forget that there is also the voluntary aspect. A phenomenon that is much more widespread than we think among today's teenagers who, in order to get recharges, latest generation cell phones, rather than a designer dress or money, choose to sell their bodies... consciously. And not always, as in the case of the protagonist, driven by the family's precarious economic conditions. This is also to be countered, upstream. In the book, the two aspects intersect, proceeding in parallel, developing a dense, seamless, compelling plot. Asha is the third child of an Albanian immigrant family, in Italy for 20 years. Decent, honest, hard-working people, well integrated into the social fabric, but barely making ends meet. Seeing her friends dress well, have beautiful homes and everything they desire, while she is forced to wear shabby clothes and live in a dilapidated house, makes her feel envious. Drawn by a friend, blinded by the prospect of having what her parents cannot give her, she runs away and decides to sell her body to get them. This choice, however, while allowing her to fulfill all her desires, soon makes her regret not being able to have a life as a normal teenager, cultivating friendships, laughing, joking, falling in love. Sold to a criminal organization, segregated and forced to their will, she escapes several times, but is always found. Discovering that she is pregnant, unable to find the little boy with whom she conceived him, she attempts to make a middle-aged man, whom she met during one of her escapes, believe that he is the child's father. Having failed in this attempt as well, tired of running away with those criminals who give her no respite, she decides to end it all. The discovery of her suicide note, which she leaves on a coffee shop table, kicks off the story.

‘A fun sex-positive romp’ Meenakshi Reddy Madhavan ‘A provocative read’ Shunali Khullar Shroff When Rubani’s long-term boyfriend dumps her and moves out, her three best friends make a decision: It’s about time the serial monogamist had her first one-night stand. In a snap, Natasha, Saira and Faiza revive a languishing plan to take a trip to Goa. Over the course of their holiday, the four girls drink, dance and karaoke, even as they nurse old wounds, kindle new romances and discover metamorphic truths about each other – and themselves. It’s a vacation with all the fixings of a quintessential girls’ trip – emotional drama, secrets unveiled, bonds strengthened – as each friend recounts the one-night stand that changed her life. Amidst swapping stories, Natasha has a mysterious midnight tryst, Saira meets a man who makes her question her disdain for commitment, and Faiza discovers that her ex still gives her butterflies. Rubani, with a mission yet to be accomplished, finds her interest piqued by a girl who’s exactly her type – and a man who isn’t. Now the holiday is drawing to a close and she must make her choice: to be or not to be wild as the Goan winds. Zany, pacy, soulful and fun, One Night Only is as much an ode to desire and sexuality as it is a celebration of female friendship in all its turbulence and splendour.

Mahima: A Memoir tells the story of an Indian-born woman and narrates firsthand the effects of religious and cultural norms, conventions and expectations. In this memoir, author Viera Masih relates Mahimas story providing insight into the narrowly prescribed cultural and religious norms of the society in which she was born. Her story captures the manner in which these norms and conventions led to her victimization. Born into a large family with six sisters and one brother, Mahima lived and studied in India for twenty-four years before traveling to the United States to pursue graduate school. Here she met and fell in love with Vivek, a Hindu boy, even though as a Christian girl, she was aware of the barriers that would make it difficult for the two of them to marry outside of their respective religious traditions. Forsaking love for tradition, Mahima accepted an arranged marriage to a man approved by her family. Even before she and Ateet were married, and then throughout their marriage she suffered abuse; however, she felt trapped as divorce was not a part of her familys moral world-view. This memoir shares Mahimas emotions as she navigates through an arranged marriage dictated by societal traditions. Her story is one of pain and redemption, a tortuous journey from darkness to light.

“Set in 1970s Bombay, the novel explores art, ambition, gender roles and class with the same shimmering prose of Swamy’s first book, the story collection A House Is a Body.” —San Francisco Chronicle “[A] sublime, boundary-pushing exploration of sexuality, creativity, and love.” —NPR In this transfixing novel, a young woman comes of age in 1960s- and 1970s-era Bombay, a vanished world that is complex and indelibly rendered. Vidya’s childhood is marked by the shattering absence and then the bewildering reappearance of her mother and baby brother at the family home. Restless, observant, and longing for connection with her brilliant and increasingly troubled mother, Vidya navigates the stifling expectations of her life with a vivid imagination until one day she peeks into a classroom where girls are learning kathak, a dazzling, centuries-old dance form that requires the utmost discipline and focus. Her pursuit of artistic transcendence through kathak soon becomes the organizing principle of her life, even as she leaves home for college and falls in complicated love with her best friend. As the uncertain future looms, she must ultimately confront the tensions between romantic love, her art, and the legacy of her own imperfect mother. Lyrical and deeply sensual, with writing as mesmerizing as kathak itself, Shruti Swamy’s The Archer is a bold portrait of a singular woman coming of age as an artist—navigating desire, duty, and the limits of the body. It is also an electrifying and utterly immersive story about the transformative power of art, and the possibilities that love can open when we’re ready.
