On October 1922 Mussolini became head of the Italian government, a situation that would last for twenty years. That power was obtained was largely due to the widespread violence perpetrated by blackshirts throughout Italy (squadristi). Violence however did not end. Old and new blackshirts played a major role in making Italy a fascist country. Contrary to the claims of many scholars that have depicted blackshirts after the March on Rome only as troublemakers for Mussolini, the book shows that they played a crucial role in establishing a full and totalitarian dictatorship. Squadristi carried out processes of fascistisation, crushed opponents and convinced bystanders and dubious people, consolidating fascist power in many aspects of social, political and even intimate life. By resorting to new archives, a long chronology and a focus on individual perspectives, this book gives voice to the perpetrators of fascist violence and offers new insights into the lives of squadristi throughout the dictatorship, outlining their beliefs, outlooks and expectations. The book shows that post-1922 squadrismo was not a side effect of Fascism's twenty-year history. On the contrary, violence represents one of the essential components of any definition of Italian Fascism.

This bibliography, listed alphabetically by authors of books and articles on Mercè Rodoreda, offers a detailed description of the content of more than two hundred studies on her work. In addition to Rodoreda’s narrative, the last decade has seen many more studies of her theater, poetry, painting, and early journalism. Also included is a comprehensive listing of editions and translations, as well as an index. The intention is to analyze and diffuse the great body of academic production on this worldwide representative of Catalan culture, with the hope that future studies can profit by a reading of pertinent existing scholarship on the subject. There are various kinds of publications, from congress proceedings and chapters in related studies to standard cultural periodicals and books from university or academic presses. Some are more specialized than others, and approaches are as varied as the authors, with focuses on comparative literature and influences, historical or biographical aspects, symbolic or thematic analyses, linguistic or pedagogical studies, psychological or formalistic viewpoints, narrative tendencies and techniques. Readers of Rodoredan scholarship will recognize the names of many of these contributors, but there are newer Rodoreda specialists represented as well.

Setanta anys després d’haver-se iniciat, la Guerra Civil segueix despertant interès arreu del món. Com s’ha destacat sovint, és el conflicte bèl·lic que, després de la Segona Guerra Mundial, més bibliografia ha generat al llarg de tota la història. I al mateix temps segueix generant controvèrsies polítiques i debats ciutadans més enllà de l’estricta discussió científica i historiogràfica. La raó de tot plegat és molt simple: queden encara moltes llacunes per omplir, moltes incògnites per resoldre d’aquella guerra. La societat, en el seu conjunt, no s’ha enfrontat cara a cara, obertament, amb tots els aspectes conflictius que resten pendents. Hi ha hagut, també, massa silencis i massa pors. Però és evident que no es podrà passar pàgina de la història de la Guerra Civil, no es podran considerar superades totes les seues conseqüències fins que d’una manera decisiva no siguem capaços d’enfrontar-nos, sense prejudicis ni reticències, amb el passat. Com s’ha dit tantes vegades, un poble que no coneix la seua història corre perill de repetir-la. Aquest és, justament, el repte de futur. I les aportacions d’aquest llibre són una contribució, des de la perspectiva de la història, per superar aquest passat.

Setenta años después de haberse iniciado, la Guerra Civil sigue despertando interés por todo el mundo. Como se ha destacado a menudo, es el conflicto bélico que, después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, más bibliografía ha generado a lo largo de toda la historia. Y al mismo tiempo sigue generando controversias políticas y debates ciudadanos más allá de la estricta discusión científica e historiográfica. La razón de todo es muy simple: quedan todavía muchas lagunas, muchas incógnitas por resolver de aquella guerra. La sociedad, en su conjunto, no se ha enfrentado cara a cara, abiertamente, con todos los aspectos conflictivos que quedan pendientes. Ha habido, también, demasiados silencios y demasiados miedos. Pero es evidente que no se podrá pasar página de la historia de la Guerra Civil, no se podrán considerar superadas todas sus consecuencias hasta que de una manera decisiva no seamos capaces de enfrentarnos, sin prejuicios ni reticencias, con el pasado. Como se ha dicho tantas veces, un pueblo que no conoce su historia corre peligro de repetirla. Éste es, justamente, el reto de futuro. Y las aportaciones de este libro son una contribución, desde la perspectiva de la historia, para superar este pasado.
