It is a common assumption that menopause is experienced by all women in the same way. However, factors such as ethnic and cultural differences, age, and personal beliefs influence the way an individual perceives and manage their menopausal symptoms. The purpose of the project was to assess symptom perception and management of menopausal symptoms in middle-aged women in a faith-based community. A descriptive research design was used to assess symptom perception and management of menopausal symptoms among sixteen midlife women in a metropolitan church in the southeast. A thirty-six item questionnaire was used to measure the perceptions of the participants of their emotional and physical health. There appeared to be some correlation between age and symptom perception among the participants. There was no relationship between age, marital status, or education in regards to methods of treatment choice. Well-informed nurses have a greater advantage in preparing women during this major transitional period in their lives. Additional research on symptom perception and management of menopausal symptoms in diverse groups of women is needed to provide holistic health care to all women.

Problem: Postmenopausal women were commonly prescribed hormone replacement therapy, thought to be cardio-protective, when the 2002 results of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) reported increased risks of coronary artery disease, stroke, and breast cancer. Since then, menopausal women have been concerned and confused about the use of hormones and often choose no hormone therapy or seek alternative treatments options because they are ill informed. Researchers have shown that women who have menopause knowledge, positively correlated with positive attitudes regarding menopause. Purpose and Scope: The purpose of this study was to describe attitudes toward menopause in a selected faith-based community women's ministry before and after an educational program regarding menopause. Goal: The goal of this project was to educate 45 to 65 year old women about the common changes women experience in menopause and the current treatment options available. This education will increase their knowledge of menopause thus improving their attitudes and perceptions regarding menopause. Objectives: First, to describe demographic characteristics of women within a selected faith-based community women's ministry. Second, to describe pre-intervention self-awareness regarding attitudes toward menopause by women within a selected faith-based community women's ministry. Third, to describe post-intervention self-awareness regarding attitudes toward menopause by women within a selected faith-based community women's ministry. Fourth, to measure changes in a self-awareness attitudes toward menopause before and after an educational intervention. Plan: Phase One: Conducted a needs assessment by evaluating current evidence regarding menopause, women's perceptions of menopause and recommended treatment options. Phase Two: Developed an educational intervention regarding menopause and current recommended treatment options. Phase Three: Implemented an evidence based menopause education intervention for a projected sample. Phase Four: Evaluated women's attitudes toward menopause before and after an educational intervention using the Attitude Toward Menopause. Outcomes and Results: Using a triangulated interventional research design, results of the pre-intervention and post-intervention measures revealed a modest mean score increase in self-awareness attitudes toward menopause in women within a selected faith-based community women's ministry. Moreover, reliability estimates based on internal consistency for the study instrumentation achieved significance, as compared with previous demonstrated reliability by Battistoni.

This open access handbook, the first of its kind, provides a comprehensive and carefully curated multidisciplinary and genre-spanning view of the state of the field of Critical Menstruation Studies, opening up new directions in research and advocacy. It is animated by the central question: ‘“what new lines of inquiry are possible when we center our attention on menstrual health and politics across the life course?” The chapters—diverse in content, form and perspective—establish Critical Menstruation Studies as a potent lens that reveals, complicates and unpacks inequalities across biological, social, cultural and historical dimensions. This handbook is an unmatched resource for researchers, policy makers, practitioners, and activists new to and already familiar with the field as it rapidly develops and expands.

Biology Of Menopause written by R. G. Gosden and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1985 with Health & Fitness categories.

All the diverse aspects of ovarian ageing in our own species and in animal models have been brought together for the first time in this concise volume. The physiological and biochemical processes responsible for the deterioration of ovarian function, the consequential loss of fertility and somatic effects of postmenopause are fully explained for biologists interested in reproduction and gerontology and for clinicians concerned with fertility in middle age and hormone replacement therapy. PREFACE: There should be good reasons for adding to the current flood of scientific literature, especially since the task of writing a monograph is a long and lonely one. This book was written for research workers, clinicians and students who have a special interest in the biology of the ageing reproductive system, of which the human menopause is a central issue. It deals with the causes of ovarian failure in mid-life, the associated physiological and behavioural changes and the preceding decline in fecundity and fertility. Despite widespread interest in this subject, no one until now has attempted to tackle the subject as a whole. A number of books have been written for the non-scientific reader who is concerned about "menopausal problems", but the professional scientist and clinician are faced with a widely dispersed literature. I felt that there was still time for an author with sufficient temerity to bring together the many aspects of reproductive system ageing and show the extent to which these are interrelated. This book is primarily concerned with human biology, but in some sections where direct evidence is lacking there are detailed accounts of animal research, and often this is interesting in its own right. By way of introduction to some of the chapters, I have outlined historical concepts leading to our present knowledge of the physiology and biochemistry of reproduction. This is intended to help readers who are not well acquainted with the subject to appreciate the less tractable problems of ageing. However, to maintain balance and economy, it has been necessary to be highly selective. Originally, I planned to shun all practical issues in reproductive medicine, but, as the book evolved, the provinces of the biologist and clinician seemed less distinct, and some mention of contraception and hormone replacement therapy became desirable. Nevertheless, these topics have been tackled primarily from the scientific standpoint, and I leave questions of clinical management of subfertility and postmenopause to others having appropriate experience and expertise. Discussion of the psychological changes of middle age, apart from those of a sexual nature or connected with ovarian ageing, are beyond the scope of this book, and as the title plainly indicates my subject is strictly the female of the species. Males are not exempt from ageing of their sexual functions, but a term other than "menopause" is needed for their less discrete changes. A good deal more research needs to be done before as detailed a story can be written about them.

Readings In The Psychology Of Gender written by Anne E. Hunter and has been published by Addison-Wesley Longman this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Juvenile Nonfiction categories.

Though most research in the psychology of gender highlights the differences between females and males, this supplementary collection of readings also investigates how they are alike. With the aim of providing an accurate picture of gender, the authors have culled readings that not only explore commonalties between females and males, but also probe the unique ways that people of different races, ethnicities, social classes and sexual orientations experience gender. The result is a model that views gender in terms of thinking, feeling, and behaving as the result of a complex interplay among biological, psychological, social and cultural processes.

Women have made it clear that they desire a broader, integrative approach to their care. Here, for the first time, Integrative Women's Health weaves together the best of conventional treatments with mind-body interventions, nutritional strategies, herbal therapies, dietary supplements, acupuncture, and manual medicine, providing clinicians with a roadmap for practicing comprehensive integrative care. Presenting the best evidence in a concise, accessible format, and written exclusively by female clinicians, this text addresses many aspects of women's health, including feminine perspectives on aging, spirituality and sexuality, specific recommendations for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV, headaches, multiple sclerosis, depression, anxiety, and cancer, as well as integrative approaches to premenstrual syndrome, pregnancy, menopause, fibroids, and endometriosis. Homeopathic, Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners provide insight into the ways in which these systems manage reproductive conditions. As leading educators in integrative medicine, editors Dr. Maizes and Dr. Low Dog demonstrate how clinicians can implement their recommendations in practice, but they also go beyond practical care to examine how to motivate patients, enhance a health history, and understand the spiritual dimensions of healing.

he starting point for this guideline is the point at which a woman has learnt that she is living with HIV and it therefore covers key issues for providing comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights-related services and support for women living with HIV. As women living with HIV face unique challenges and human rights violations related to their sexuality and reproduction within their families and communities as well as from the health-care institutions where they seek care particular emphasis is placed on the creation of an enabling environment to support more effective health interventions and better health outcomes. This guideline is meant to help countries to more effectively and efficiently plan develop and monitor programmes and services that promote gender equality and human rights and hence are more acceptable and appropriate for women living with HIV taking into account the national and local epidemiological context. It discusses implementation issues that health interventions and service delivery must address to achieve gender equality and support human rights.

Even though slightly over half of the U.S. population is female, medical research historically has neglected the health needs of women. However, over the past two decades, there have been major changes in government support of women's health research-in policies, regulations, and the organization of research efforts. To assess the impact of these changes, Congress directed the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to ask the IOM to examine what has been learned from that research and how well it has been put into practice as well as communicated to both providers and women. Women's Health Research finds that women's health research has contributed to significant progress over the past 20 years in lessening the burden of disease and reducing deaths from some conditions, while other conditions have seen only moderate change or even little or no change. Gaps remain, both in research areas and in the application of results to benefit women in general and across multiple population groups. Given the many and significant roles women play in our society, maintaining support for women's health research and enhancing its impact are not only in the interest of women, they are in the interest of us all.
