This study examined risk factors that contribute to young adults drinking and driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages. These factors included demographic variables such as gender, race, ethnicity, and educational level, as well as symptoms of depression and alcohol use. All participants were young adults 18 to 25 years of age residents of Miami, Florida or its vicinity who had driven under the influence of alcohol at some point in their lives. Participants were recruited via the Survey Monkey’s feature “Target Audience,” which delivers surveys to those who potentially meet the study’s criteria. Of 148 individuals who consented to participate and completed the study’s demographic information, 113 (76%) were disqualified due to not meeting the inclusionary criteria of driving under the influence of alcohol at least once in their lives. The final sample was comprised of 35 participants, who completed the assessment instruments: a) the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), b) the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT), and c) the General DUI Scale (GDUI). The General DUI Scale (GDUI) (Santa, 2020) is a screening tool constructed by the author consisting of 13 items assessing motivation and reasons to drive under the influence of alcohol. The GDUI obtained an acceptable Cronbach’s Alpha internal consistency of .862, with sample items of “I am willing to take a risk,” “I never feel drunk,” and “there is never a designated driver.” Similar to Sloan and Eldred’s (2014) investigation, participants endorsed items related to their motivation and reasons for driving intoxicated at a young age. It was hypothesized that gender, ethnicity, or level of education would be related to driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as to symptoms of depression or alcohol use. The results of the study showed statistically significant correlations between symptoms of depression and driving under the influence, symptoms of depression and alcohol use, and alcohol use and driving under the influence. Although trends were observed in the hypothesized direction, Analyses of Variance showed no statistically significant differences between demographic variables and driving under the influence of alcohol. Males showed a higher trend than females in posing a risk for driving under the influence, as well as Latinos or Hispanics (the highest mean score), when compared to African Americans (the lowest mean score group). A nonparametric, Kruskal-Wallis Rank Order test was conducted to assess if level of education had any bearing on driving under the influence of alcohol. This test was selected due to the uneven distribution of participants by educational level, i.e., the master’s degree group had only one participant. Although no statistical significance was found, the doctoral level participants showed a lower trend of driving under the influence of alcohol than high school, undergraduate or bachelor degree participants. Additional Analyses of Variance were conducted between Alcohol Use and Gender, Alcohol Use and Ethnicity, and Alcohol Use and Education. Only Alcohol Use and Education were significant, but this analysis must be interpreted with caution, due to the uneven distribution of participants by educational level. In conclusion, driving under the influence is a grave societal problem, and law enforcement cannot solve the problem alone. A concerted effort must be made to minimize the number of drunk driving incidents. This pilot study provides a stepping stone for future research to replicate and improve. Further research with larger samples can extend the participants’ age range from 16 to 30 years of age, to improve external validity. A merit of this study is the use of the new GDUI instrument with a sample from Miami-Dade County, Florida, an area with a very high number of DUIs. Future studies can expand to adjacent counties that present DUI-related problems in Florida, as well as to other states with high incidence of DUIs. It is hoped that this pilot study and subsequent research brings greater awareness to the risk factors associated to young adults driving under the influence of alcohol.

Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

The understanding of how to reduce risk factors for mental disorders has expanded remarkably as a result of recent scientific advances. This study, mandated by Congress, reviews those advances in the context of current research and provides a targeted definition of prevention and a conceptual framework that emphasizes risk reduction. Highlighting opportunities for and barriers to interventions, the book draws on successful models for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, injuries, and smoking. In addition, it reviews the risk factors associated with Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, alcohol abuse and dependence, depressive disorders, and conduct disorders and evaluates current illustrative prevention programs. The models and examination provide a framework for the design, application, and evaluation of interventions intended to prevent mental disorders and the transfer of knowledge about prevention from research to clinical practice. The book presents a focused research agenda, with recommendations on how to develop effective intervention programs, create a cadre of prevention researchers, and improve coordination among federal agencies.
