Rapid population growth and climate variability have been posing pressure on groundwater management, especially in regions dominated by irrigation agriculture. Effective management practices require a better understanding of groundwater dynamics and its contributing factors, such as recharge, groundwater-surface water interactions, soil and unsaturated zone characteristics. Although groundwater models can provide valuable insights into these questions, these models are often nonexistent or cost prohibitive. The purpose of this study is to use a data-driven approach to understand the spatiotemporal dynamics of groundwater level observations. Using the Platte River Basin in Nebraska as the study area, I examined explanatory factors (e.g. precipitation, pumping and streamflow) that may be associated with the dynamics of groundwater table using data mining techniques. Groundwater level data from 14 wells during the time period of 2000-2018 was used for this study. Two different approaches for examining the spatial and temporal datasets were employed and compared. In the first approach, I used the principal component analysis (PCA) and a cluster analysis to group the wells into three different clusters. A cross-correlation analysis was then used to associate the clusters with explanatory variables. In the second approach, I used multivariate singular spectrum analysis (MSSA) to decompose the time series into three components, including trends, seasonal and other oscillatory signals. Then a time series clustering method was adopted to divide the wells into different groups. The oscillatory signals from the MSSA and time-series clustering were used to examine temporal dynamics of each group of wells. Both approaches were found to be useful in understanding the spatial pattern and explanatory factors influencing the groundwater level variations. The spatiotemporal variations in groundwater levels in the Platte River Basin were found to be influenced by groundwater pumping, natural recharge and hydrological connection with the Platte River and its tributaries in varying degrees. This study shows that data mining is a useful tool to understand groundwater resource dynamics.

The southwest region of the United States has recently been under drought conditions, and this has the potential to harm the long term sustainability of agriculture production, industrial innovation, and drinking water quality. Trends suggest that the region is likely to become drier and experience more severe droughts. This will make sustaining water supplies in the Southwest even more challenging. The inaccessibility and variability in groundwater data can make it challenging to examine impacts such as drought, changes in agriculture, and population variability. The purpose of this study is to advance our understanding of changes in groundwater levels and how they relate to water use and sustainability across the state of New Mexico. We have utilized both spatial and temporal methods to evaluate change in groundwater level using a groundwater level database. This report used historical data provided by several state governmental agencies. R-Statistic was used to predict and evaluate depth to water (DTW) in a weighted non-linear regression (Loess) model. Results of the model were then imported into Excel and ESRI's ArcGIS software to analyze the change in depth to water over time and space. Four hypothesis were formed to reflect the purpose: groundwater levels are changing in New Mexico, increases in DTW are affected by water use, average change in depth to water for counties located along a major river are significantly different compared to counties not located on a major river, and wells located near major rivers typically have the lowest rate of increase in DTW. If drought conditions continue, surface water supplies may be restricted; this could cause depth to water to increase at higher magnitudes and rates. Additional research is needed to understand what policy actions and infrastructure are needed to preserve the equity in water resources for future generations in New Mexico.

The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

The aim of this book is to document for the first time the dimensions and requirements of effective integrated groundwater management (IGM). Groundwater management is a formidable challenge, one that remains one of humanity’s foremost priorities. It has become a largely non-renewable resource that is overexploited in many parts of the world. In the 21st century, the issue moves from how to simply obtain the water we need to how we manage it sustainably for future generations, future economies, and future ecosystems. The focus then becomes one of understanding the drivers and current state of the groundwater resource, and restoring equilibrium to at-risk aquifers. Many interrelated dimensions, however, come to bear when trying to manage groundwater effectively. An integrated approach to groundwater necessarily involves many factors beyond the aquifer itself, such as surface water, water use, water quality, and ecohydrology. Moreover, the science by itself can only define the fundamental bounds of what is possible; effective IGM must also engage the wider community of stakeholders to develop and support policy and other socioeconomic tools needed to realize effective IGM. In order to demonstrate IGM, this book covers theory and principles, embracing: 1) an overview of the dimensions and requirements of groundwater management from an international perspective; 2) the scale of groundwater issues internationally and its links with other sectors, principally energy and climate change; 3) groundwater governance with regard to principles, instruments and institutions available for IGM; 4) biophysical constraints and the capacity and role of hydroecological and hydrogeological science including water quality concerns; and 5) necessary tools including models, data infrastructures, decision support systems and the management of uncertainty. Examples of effective, and failed, IGM are given. Throughout, the importance of the socioeconomic context that connects all effective IGM is emphasized.
