"It is often stated that the Australian elderly are ‘asset rich but income poor’. Is this still the case when compared with other rich nations? What patterns of housing wealth can be expected in future years? This paper looks at patterns of own-home wealth across the life cycle in Australia and in several North American and Western European countries." -- Executive summary.

"Today, more low-income Americans have greater access to credit than ever before, thanks in large part to the growth of global capital markets and liberal use of credit scores. But not all have benefited equally from the opened spigots. Some are overpaying for mortgage credit, others are getting in over their heads, and some have become the victims of predatory lenders." "In this volume, noted analysts examine how low-income families can continue to participate in the American dream of homeownership, building up assets and equity along the way, and what businesses and government can do to ensure that low-income families succeed in homeownership."--BOOK JACKET.

Wealth inequality has been not only rising at unsustainable pace but also dissociated from income inequality because of the fact that wealth is increasing without concomitant increase in savings and productive capital. Compelling evidence indicates that capital gains and other economic rents are mainly responsible for wealth inequality and its divergence from income inequality. The main argument of the book is that interest-based debt contracts are one of the drivers of wealth inequality through creating disproportional economic rents for the asset-rich. The book also introduces the idea of risk-sharing asset-based redistribution, which is a novel and viable policy proposal, as an effective redistribution tool to address the wealth inequality problem. Furthermore, a large-scale stock-flow consistent macroeconomic model, which is step by step constructed in the book, sheds light on the formation of wealth inequality in a debt-based economy and on the prospective benefits of implementing risk-sharing asset-based redistribution policy tools compared to traditional redistribution policy options. The research presented in this book is novel in many respects and first of its kind in the Islamic economics and finance literature.

Over the past three decades, average household wealth in the United States has declined among all but the richest families, with a near 80 percent drop among the nation's poorest families. Although the national debate about inequality has focused on income, it is wealth—the private assets amassed and passed on within families—that provides the extra economic cushion needed to move beyond mere day-to-day survival. Assets for the Poor is the first full-scale investigation into the importance of family wealth and the need for policies to encourage asset-building among the poor. Assets for the Poor shows how institutional mechanisms designed to encourage acquisition of capital and property favor middle-class and high-income families. For example, the aggregate value of home mortgage tax deductions far outweighs the dollar amount of the subsidies provided by Section 8 rental vouchers and public housing. Banking definitions of creditworthiness largely exclude minorities, and welfare rules have made it nearly impossible for single mothers to accumulate savings, let alone stocks or real estate. Due to persistent residential segregation, even those minority families who do own homes are often denied equal access to better schools and public services. The research in this volume shows that the poor do make use of the assets they have. Cash gifts—although small in size—are frequent within families and often lead to such positive results as homebuying and debt reduction, while tangible assets such as tools and cars help increase employment prospects. Assets for the Poor examines policies such as Individual Development Account tax subsidies to reward financial savings among the poor, and more liberal credit rules to make borrowing easier and less costly. The contributors also offer thoughtful advice for bringing the poor into mainstream savings institutions and warn against developing asset building policies at the expense of existing safety net programs. Asset-building for low-income families is a powerful idea that offers hope to families searching for a way out of poverty. Assets for the Poor challenges current thinking regarding poverty reduction policies and proposes a major shift in the way we think about families and how they make a better life. A Volume in the Ford Foundation Series on Asset Building

Wealth and the wealthy have received relatively little attention from social scientists despite a growing wealth gap. Aimed at a broad social science and public readership, this book draws on new data on wealth to answer the following key questions: What is wealth? Who has got it? Where might we draw a 'wealth line'? Who lies above it? And what might policy do about wealth and the wealthy? Using data sources from the HMRC to the Sunday Times Rich list, this book provides a comprehensive and critical discussion of these issues, and looks at potential policy responses, including 'asset-based' welfare and taxation.

People with jobs believe that their 'income' is representative of their wealth. The questions they ask are "who do you work for?" "How much do you earn?" or "what car do you drive?" These people fall into the category of "looking good, going nowhere." They buy stuff to look and feel rich. To sustain their lifestyle they continually work harder, longer hours and constantly educate themselves to become even more specialized. A paycheck, no matter how big, cannot be defined as wealth or riches. Most people think that getting a bigger paycheck or salary is making them richer. Nothing can be further from truth. In fact 95% of people spend every dollar they earn. By the way acronym for job is "Just Over Broke" We need 'cash flow' to pay our bills, put food on the table, send our kids to school and sustain any kind of lifestyle. But if your 'cash flow' is solely reliant on your paycheck then you are at grave risk. You can fall ill, have an accident or lose your job. Ask millions who have lost their jobs in the financial downturn. Having a job severely restricts your cash flow capabilities. You can work for only 'X' hours in a day. Your pay check will be limited to number of hours worked multiplied by your hourly rate. Your first step to creating wealth comes when your 'cash flow' starts coming from passive income rather than paycheck. In other words, your investments and businesses pay you money whether you set out of bed or not. Your next step forward is to create long term passive income cash flow backed by solid asset base. Wealth is all about owning assets. However an asset must have both capital growth and income. Don't buy property first if you want to become rich or you will become 'asset rich' and 'cash poor'. You must first concentrate on generating a rather large passive income. Cash flow not only supports your lifestyle but also has the ability to get loans to buy income producing assets. Passive cash flow is generated out of investments (paper assets or properties that are fully paid for), businesses that have systems in place and do not require your day to day presence, or your income generated as a result of royalties from intellectual property rights that you have created. To grow rich you have to make either money or people work for you even when you sleep or are holidaying on the beach. The quickest way to become rich fast is to generate massive cash flow through a business that has proven systems. You then have to buy assets that give you not only passive income but also capital appreciation. If you do not have a huge capital to start a business, then join a good network marketing company. It is not only a good passive income generator but you will also get personalized coaching in business, marketing and leadership skills from those who have stakes in your business. So every night before you go to sleep calculate the number of hours you have spent in creating passive income for yourself as against the number of hours you have spent in generating linear income that has helped others get rich because of your effort. You must set a target each day to add more and more hours towards generating passive income. If you do this simple exercise on a regular basis you will take a giant leap towards attaining financial freedom.
