A intenção deste livro é convidar os assistentes sociais para um debate crítico sobre a relação entre Serviço Social e as diretrizes curriculares, o projeto ético político, os direitos e a cidadania, as políticas sociais, a Constituição/88 e a universidade e as influências teóricas polemiza os caminhos percorridos pela profissão pós redemocratização no Brasil. Para entendermos os caminhos percorridos pelo Serviço Social no Brasil consideramos importante resgatar o contexto de emersão da redemocratização no país e como a profissão se inseriu nessa dinâmica, destacando quais foram os elementos políticos e econômicos que consubstanciaram a democracia pós-ditadura civil-militar e os caminhos percorridos pela profissão na afirmação de um projeto ético-político que suscita ainda muitas incompreensões e distorções. Também podemos notar as tendências teóricas que dividem a produção do conhecimento no Serviço Social, o que nos remete a uma indagação se, de fato, ocorreu uma aproximação ao referencial marxiano e marxista que permitisse uma compreensão da realidade brasileira e internacional em conformidade com o atual estágio de acumulação do capital em curso nos anos de 1990. Ou, ainda, se essa aproximação não continuou se dando de forma enviesada pelos assistentes sociais que, na maioria das vezes, utilizam-se da "arte da tesoura " como instrumento de apreender pensamentos variados e selecionar aqueles que mais se afinam com suas discussões, justificando, assim, os aportes críticos, porém, em alguns casos, tendendo mais a um debate mecânico e esvaziado de rigor teórico ou ainda eclético, em total consonância com a ordem burguesa.
