Clustering and tree models are widely used in the social and biological sciences to analyze similarity relations. Tree Models of Similarity and Association describes how matrices of similarities or associations among entities can be modeled using trees, and to explain some of the issues that arise in performing such analyses and correctly interpreting the results. James E. Corter clearly distinguishes ultrametric trees (fit by the techniques widely known as "hierarchical clustering") from additive trees and discusses how specific aspects of each type of tree can be interpreted through the use of applications as examples. Many social science data are by nature organized in cross-classified formats, for example, gender and racial differences in the relationship between education and occupation, cross-national and/or temporal changes in patterns of marriage homogamy, temporal variations in import/export or input/output patterns, changes in the relationship between class positions, party identification and voting, and changes in the characteristics of urban neighborhoods in the United States over time. While the substantive rationale in exploring their systematic relationship may appear simple and straightforward, the application of appropriate statistical tools to decipher and interpret the meaning and complexities of the relationships involved can sometimes be difficult. Fortunately, with the important pioneering works in this field we now have a large repertoire of statistical models, association models in particular, which are well-suited for such analyses. Although association models have been widely utilized by social stratification researchers, especially in the study of social mobility and assortative mating such techniques have yet to be widely disseminated to other social science disciplines. This is partly because most of the important contributions are scattered in various journals and there has not been any systematic effort to integrate the family of association models into a single, coherent framework.

ABSTRACT: This dissertation develops novel single random effect models as well as bivariate correlated random effects model for clustered data with bivariate mixed responses. Logit and identity link functions are used for the binary and continuous responses. For the ease of interpretation of the regression effects, random effect of the binary response has bridge distribution so that the marginal model of mean of the binary response after integrating out the random effect preserves logistic form. And the marginal regression function of the continuous response preserves linear form. Within-cluster and within-subject associations could be measured by our proposed models. For the bivariate correlated random effects model, we illustrate how different levels of the association between two random effects induce different Kendall's tau values for association between the binary and continuous responses from the same cluster. Fully parametric and semi-parametric Bayesian methods as well as maximum likelihood method are illustrated for model analysis. In the semiparametric Bayesian model, normality assumption of the regression error for the continuous response is relaxed by using a nonparametric Dirichlet Process prior. Robustness of the bivariate correlated random effects model using ML method to misspecifications of regression function as well as random effect distribution is investigated by simulation studies. The Bayesian and likelihood methods are applied to a developmental toxicity study of ethylene glycol in mice.
