The Moon The Western Imagination written by Scott L. Montgomery and has been published by University of Arizona Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Science categories.

The Moon is at once a face with a thousand expressions and the archetypal planet. Throughout history it has been gazed upon by people of every culture in every walk of life. From early perceptions of the Moon as an abode of divine forces, humanity has in turn accepted the mathematized Moon of the Greeks, the naturalistic lunar portrait of Jan van Eyck, and the telescopic view of Galileo. Scott Montgomery has produced a richly detailed analysis of how the Moon has been visualized in Western culture through the ages, revealing the faces it has presented to philosophers, writers, artists, and scientists for nearly three millennia. To do this, he has drawn on a wide array of sources that illustrate mankind's changing concept of the nature and significance of heavenly bodies from classical antiquity to the dawn of modern science. Montgomery especially focuses on the seventeenth century, when the Moon was first mapped and its features named. From literary explorations such as Francis Godwin's Man in the Moone and Cyrano de Bergerac's L'autre monde to Michael Van Langren's textual lunar map and Giambattista Riccioli's Almagestum novum, he shows how Renaissance man was moved by the lunar orb, how he battled to claim its surface, and how he in turn elevated the Moon to a new level in human awareness. The effect on human imagination has been cumulative: our idea of the Moon, and therefore the planets, is multilayered and complex, having been enriched by associations played out in increasingly complicated harmonies over time. We have shifted the way we think about the lunar face from a "perfect" body to an earthlike one, with corresponding changes in verbal and visual expression. Ultimately, Montgomery suggests, our concept of the Moon has never wandered too far from the world we know best—the Earth itself. And when we finally establish lunar bases and take up some form of residence on the Moon's surface, we will not be conquering a New World, fresh and mostly unknown, but a much older one, ripe with history.

The Secret Doorway written by Paul Hutchins and has been published by Imagination Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11 with Nature categories.

A pictorial drama of the creation of Heaven and Earth based upon the awe-inspiring photo images from the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes. Author, Paul Hutchins uncovers a grand drama on a universal scale that has been playing out since the invention of the telescope. He poses the question, is this grand drama merely in response to an ancient invitation recorded in the Book of Isaiah? It states in Isaiah 40:26, ""Look up into the heavens."" Who created all the stars? Through the use of his imagination and the invention of the telescope, man has discovered a once secret doorway to a world beyond imagination. He has now, in this age of cutting edge technology developed flying space telescopes in his quest to know, how did we get here? What he has found has astounded him. Hutchins farther poses the question; if it took over 400 years of man’s imagination from when the telescope was invented, and countless other inventions including the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes, to merely take photo images of the universe, then who’s imagination is responsible for the reality those photo images represent? As we peer through this doorway to the heavens and look upon these heavenly cosmic bodies, we find ourselves awed by their grandeur. The pressing question becomes too large to ignore. Who is responsible for all these things? Could it be that we are now peering into the mind of a supreme architect with an imagination far beyond that of mere mortals? Could we be peering into the mind of imagination supreme? Could it be that we have been brought to this point in history unbeknownst to ourselves and given this technology by the one who extended that ancient invitation recorded by Isaiah 2700 years ago?

The essays in this volume reflect the wide-ranging interests of John D. North, distinguished historian of science and philosophy. Section One has papers on horoscopes, astrolabes and time-reckoning, and it includes an edition of a twelfth-century treatise on the astrolabe and surveys of astrolabes. Section Two is devoted to the study of the medieval cosmos. These contributions discuss Calcidian astronomy, astronomy in the Spanish Jewish community, the role of God in scholastic natural philosophy, and other themes. New information is presented about previously unknown scholars such as Abd al-Mas of Winchester and Simon Bredon. Section Three contains essays on philosophy and scholarship in the early modern period, including pieces about commentaries on Boethius's "Consolatio Philosophiae" in the Northern Renaissance, Spinozistic philosophy, and the early modern concept of substance. These essays take up the various themes to which John D. North has made important contributions: the development of scientific knowledge and methodology, the style of scientific and philosophical thought, and the uses of scientific knowledge in the making of instruments or the casting of horoscopes: this book will be of much interest to all historians of science and philosophy. Contributors include: Charles Burnett, Bruce S. Eastwood, Owen Gingerich, Bernard R. Goldstein, Edward Grant, Keith Hutchison, David A. King, Richard Lorch, F.R. Maddison, Lodi Nauta, Detlev Patzold, J.A. van Ruler, Julio Samso, Keith Snedegar, A.J. Turner, Arjo Vanderjagt, and G. Frederici Vescovini.

Physics: Imagination and Reality introduces the reader to major ideas and the conceptual structure of modern physics, by tracing its development from the introduction of fields into physics by Faraday and Maxwell in the last century. Because the approach is historical, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the subjects. It should appeal to anyone interested in a basic understanding of the contemporary physicists view of the physical world. It avoids all but the simplest mathematics and presents ideas and concepts in everyday language.Physics: Imagination and Reality attempts to provide educated citizens with an understanding of contemporary physics and, at the same time, shows that its ideas have a grandeur, a challenge to the imagination and an aesthetic appeal which merit its recognition as an integral part of our culture.

Astronomy For Amateurs written by Camille Flammarion and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-05 with Science categories.

The Science of Astronomy is sublime and beautiful. Noble, elevating, consoling, divine, it gives us wings, and bears us through Infinitude. In these ethereal regions all is pure, luminous, and splendid. Dreams of the Ideal, even of the Inaccessible, weave their subtle spells upon us. The imagination soars aloft, and aspires to the sources of Eternal Beauty. What greater delight can be conceived, on a fine spring evening, at the hour when the crescent moon is shining in the West amid the last glimmer of twilight, than the contemplation of that grand and silent spectacle of the stars stepping forth in sequence in the vast Heavens? All sounds of life die out upon the earth, the last notes of the sleepy birds have sunk away, the Angelus of the church hard by has rung the close of day. But if life is arrested around us, we may seek it in the Heavens. These incandescing orbs are so many points of interrogation suspended above our heads in the inaccessible depths of space.... Gradually they multiply. There is Venus, the white star of the shepherd. There Mars, the little celestial world so near our own. There the giant Jupiter. The seven stars of the Great Bear seem to point out the pole, while they slowly revolve around it.... What is this nebulous light that blanches the darkness of the heavens, and traverses the constellations like a celestial path? It is the Galaxy, the Milky Way, composed of millions on millions of suns!... The darkness is profound, the abyss immense.... See! Yonder a shooting star glides silently across the sky, and disappears!...

Has anyone ever seen with their own eyes that the Earth goes around the sun? Even to this day, no one has. However, 500 and even 2000 years ago, some astronomers managed to point out that this is the case. At that time, people’s range of activities was strictly confined, the technology and tools used were extremely primitive, and many of the mathematical methods used today had not been developed. How did those astronomers make and verify this discovery? This book explains this exciting demonstration process. It enables anyone with a basic junior-high-school knowledge of geometry and a certain degree of spatial imagination to understand this and other interesting discoveries in the solar system. By demonstrating this interesting process, the book not only satisfies readers' curiosity using the simplest mathematics, but also inspires them to explore the new and unknown world.

Beneath the easy-reading style lies a work of substance that is a narrow but penetrating contribution to cultural history.¿ Choice says: ¿A work of painstaking scholarship . . . . It is fascinating to see how each era viewed the moon in terms of the religious and philosophical climate of the period.¿ Over 100 illustrations.
