El hecho religioso, sin dejar de ser una circunstancia vital del creyente, y por tanto algo propio del ámbito privado, tiene unas dimensiones públicas innegables, lo que hace que sean motivo de debate y den ocasión al conflicto. La religión no es solo una opción personal que se limita al ámbito de lo privado, sino que tiene dimensiones públicas que es menester reconocer si queremos construir un laicismo a la altura de los tiempos. Es claro que el hecho religioso siempre conlleva ambos niveles, que deben ser distinguidos con claridad para enfocar los asuntos religiosos y las propuestas de políticas públicas de un modo integral. Del mismo modo que también deben distinguirse las creencias religiosas de las leyes. Las primeras afectan únicamente al fuero interno de los creyentes y a las comunidades de fieles. Las segundas se hacen para todos los ciudadanos, creyentes o no, y se construyen sobre la base de la voluntad popular representada en los Parlamentos. Es prudente que, en el terreno de la dimensión pública de las creencias, templemos nuestras razones, soseguemos nuestro discurso y evitemos la radicalización y el catastrofismo. Y, sobre todo, entendamos que, en el terreno de la elaboración de las leyes civiles, es plenamente legítimo que expongamos los fundamentos éticos de nuestras razones, pero no que intentemos hacer de nuestra opción moral una obligación legal para todos. Este libro pretende proporcionar a los lectores claves para comprender cómo ha evolucionado la cuestión laica en los últimos años en la sociedad contemporánea y cómo encaja el actual debate en torno a la laicidad en la filosofía política del momento, asumiendo que el propio debate se ha transformado por la modificación del espacio religioso debido al aumento de la diversidad religiosa.

Guatemala has undergone an unprecedented conversion to Protestantism since the 1970s, so that thirty percent of its people now belong to Protestant churches, more than in any other Latin American nation. To illuminate some of the causes of this phenomenon, Virginia Garrard-Burnett here offers the first history of Protestantism in a Latin American country, focusing specifically on the rise of Protestantism within the ethnic and political history of Guatemala. Garrard-Burnett finds that while Protestant missionaries were early valued for their medical clinics, schools, translation projects, and especially for the counterbalance they provided against Roman Catholicism, Protestantism itself attracted few converts in Guatemala until the 1960s. Since then, however, the militarization of the state, increasing public violence, and the "globalization" of Guatemalan national politics have undermined the traditional ties of kinship, custom, and belief that gave Guatemalans a sense of identity, and many are turning to Protestantism to recreate a sense of order, identity, and belonging.
