Vol. 1200 of the LNM series deals with the geometrical structure of finite dimensional normed spaces. One of the main topics is the estimation of the dimensions of euclidean and l^n p spaces which nicely embed into diverse finite-dimensional normed spaces. An essential method here is the concentration of measure phenomenon which is closely related to large deviation inequalities in Probability on the one hand, and to isoperimetric inequalities in Geometry on the other. The book contains also an appendix, written by M. Gromov, which is an introduction to isoperimetric inequalities on riemannian manifolds. Only basic knowledge of Functional Analysis and Probability is expected of the reader. The book can be used (and was used by the authors) as a text for a first or second graduate course. The methods used here have been useful also in areas other than Functional Analysis (notably, Combinatorics).

Although this was first published in 1976, it has gained new significance and renewed interest among statisticians due to the developments of modern statistical techniques such as the bootstrap, the efficacy of which can be ascertained by asymptotic expansions. This also is the only book containing a detailed treatment of various refinements of the multivariate central limit theorem (CLT), including Berry-Essen-type error bounds for probabilities of general classes of functions and sets, and asymptotic expansions for both lattice and non-lattice distributions.

Excellent introductory text, written by two experts, presents a coherent and systematic view of principles and methods. Topics include integration by parts, Watson's lemma, LaPlace's method, stationary phase, and steepest descents. Additional subjects include the Mellin transform method and less elementary aspects of the method of steepest descents. 1975 edition.

This book gives a self-contained introduction to the subject of asymptotic approximation for multivariate integrals for both mathematicians and applied scientists. A collection of results of the Laplace methods is given. Such methods are useful for example in reliability, statistics, theoretical physics and information theory. An important special case is the approximation of multidimensional normal integrals. Here the relation between the differential geometry of the boundary of the integration domain and the asymptotic probability content is derived. One of the most important applications of these methods is in structural reliability. Engineers working in this field will find here a complete outline of asymptotic approximation methods for failure probability integrals.

The asymptotic analysis has obtained new impulses with the general development of various branches of mathematical analysis and their applications. In this book, such impulses originate from the use of slowly varying functions and the asymptotic behavior of generalized functions. The most developed approaches related to generalized functions are those of Vladimirov, Drozhinov and Zavyalov, and that of Kanwal and Estrada. The first approach is followed by the authors of this book and extended in the direction of the S-asymptotics. The second approach OCo of Estrada, Kanwal and Vindas OCo is related to moment asymptotic expansions of generalized functions and the Ces''aro behavior. The main features of this book are the uses of strong methods of functional analysis and applications to the analysis of asymptotic behavior of solutions to partial differential equations, Abelian and Tauberian type theorems for integral transforms as well as for the summability of Fourier series and integrals. The book can be used by applied mathematicians, physicists, engineers and others who use classical asymptotic methods and wish to consider non-classical objects (generalized functions) and their asymptotics now in a more advanced setting.

Asymptotic Approximations of Integrals deals with the methods used in the asymptotic approximation of integrals. Topics covered range from logarithmic singularities and the summability method to the distributional approach and the Mellin transform technique for multiple integrals. Uniform asymptotic expansions via a rational transformation are also discussed, along with double integrals with a curve of stationary points. For completeness, classical methods are examined as well. Comprised of nine chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to the fundamental concepts of asymptotics, followed by a discussion on classical techniques used in the asymptotic evaluation of integrals, including Laplace's method, Mellin transform techniques, and the summability method. Subsequent chapters focus on the elementary theory of distributions; the distributional approach; uniform asymptotic expansions; and integrals which depend on auxiliary parameters in addition to the asymptotic variable. The book concludes by considering double integrals and higher-dimensional integrals. This monograph is intended for graduate students and research workers in mathematics, physics, and engineering.
