The contributors to this major intervention into Indian historiography trace the strategies through which Dalits have been marginalized as well as the ways Dalit intellectuals and leaders have shaped emancipatory politics in modern India. Moving beyond the anticolonialism/nationalism binary that dominates the study of India, the contributors assess the benefits of colonial modernity and place humiliation, dignity, and spatial exclusion at the center of Indian historiography. Several essays discuss the ways Dalits used the colonial courts and legislature to gain minority rights in the early twentieth century, while others highlight Dalit activism in social and religious spheres. The contributors also examine the struggle of contemporary middle-class Dalits to reconcile their caste and class, intercaste tensions among Sikhs, and the efforts by Dalit writers to challenge dominant constructions of secular and class-based citizenship while emphasizing the ongoing destructiveness of caste identity. In recovering the long history of Dalit struggles against caste violence, exclusion, and discrimination, Dalit Studies outlines a new agenda for the study of India, enabling a significant reconsideration of many of the Indian academy's core assumptions. Multiculturalism In A Cross National Perspective written by Michael A. Burayidi and has been published by University Press of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Education categories.

This book provides a discussion of multiculturalism from a global perspective. It progresses from a discussion of the ideological and philosophical arguments for multiculturalism through its political, public policy, and socio-economic dimensions. Multicultural practices from Canada, Germany, India, Israel, Nigeria, Rwanda, the United Kingdom, and the United States are discussed. The response to multiculturalism differs from one country to the other and is influenced by the political context, rules of immigration, colonial legacy, domestic institutional structures, and pressure from interest groups. Because multiculturalism is a contentious issue as groups vie for limited resources, the debate on multiculturalism will be a heated one. Governments can facilitate the process by creating an environment that enables the exchange of ideas without conflict and antagonism.

Dalit Movement In Karnataka written by Dr. R. Madhusudhan and has been published by Rudra Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Education categories.

The Weaker Sections in general and the Scheduled Castes (Dalits) in particular, have been subjected to exploitation, oppression, humiliation and multiform deprivation that persists even after independence, though with some difference. They have been socially degraded, economically exploited and politically subordinated by the dominant forces in Indian society. They suffered from multiple deprivations and were the victims of 'cumulative domination'. Enraged over this, the Dalits have been developing a new awakening and consciousness and have started various movements all over the country, but more vigorously in Dalit Movement in Karnataka Dr. R. Madhusudhan's work is a painstaking, comprehensive analysis of the diverse forms of protest movements which emerged among the Dalits against the multiple forms of deprivations experienced by them. Dalits have waged struggles against the structures of dominance and control with varying degrees of successes and failures. Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive and aggregate level documentation of these struggles, their outcome, etc. as yet. On this count, the present study is timely significant as it fulfils overdue need for the literature on Dalit movement in one of the developed states in India. The author very sensitively endeavours to assess the contribution made by various agencies and also by Dalit themselves to overcome the maladies that afflict Dalits. The book offers a detailed account of the theoretical and empirical dimensions of the issue under discussion. 'The women tell it like it is... So riveting is the narration that it is difficult to put down the book until their stories are finished. For a non-fiction academic work this is no small feat.’ — The Hindu Sharmila Rege’s path breaking study of Dalit women’s writings and lives offers a powerful counter-narrative to the mainstream assumptions about the development of feminism in India in the 20th century. Extensive extracts from eight Dalit women’s writings cover issues such as food and hunger, community, caste, labour, education, violence, resistance and collective struggle. The voices that resound throughout the book, reveal that Dalit feminism, far from being ‘silent’ as so often presumed, is rich, powerful, layered – and highly articulate. Published by Zubaan.
