Excerpt from At the Bottom of Life's Ladder IN the following pages, an attempt has been made. To summarise the principal causes of a man falling to the bottom of life's ladder, the ways and means open to him for regaining his position, his chances of success, and finally to offer suggestions for a better and more humane treatment of these poor shipwrecked souls. The subject is one, which has never, up to the present, received that attention which it deserves and which it will be forced to receive before long, for instead of the difficulty becoming less complex, its complexity increases as the years roll by, and though I cannot claim to have solved the difficulty in this pamphlet, yet I hope that the perusal of its pages will stimulate the appetite of the reader and lead him to take an interest in a subject, the importance of which, for the future welfare of this country cannot be exaggerated. The material has been accumulated during many years of work amongst the poor in the East End of London, during which time I have had the Opportunity of study ing all sorts and conditions of men - burglars, thieves, rogues and impostors of all kinds have been interviewed and their tales revealed in a light which on more than one occasion has caused me anxious moments. With these, however, we are but casually concerned in the present work. The particular object being to draw attention to the thousands of honest men with whom I have personally come in contact, to whom work would be the greatest blessing; men who shun charity until the internal gnawing becomes so insufferable, that it is impossible for them to refuse it longer. Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Social Indicators Research: An International and Interdisciplinary Journal for Quality-of-Life Measurement was founded by Alex C. Michalos and published its first issue in March 1974. It has been the leading journal for scholarly research in its field for over thirty years. This volume is published in celebration of that record of accomplishment. The 19 articles assembled here are a selection drawn from the 34 (2.4%) most frequently cited articles in the journal’s history. An introductory essay written by Michalos explains the historical and scientific importance of each article in the development of social indicators or quality-of-life research. It provides a rare overview of the perceived scientific problems that researchers around the world addressed in the first three decades of exploration, as well as a view of some of the problems to be addressed in the future. A short essay describing the origins of the journal by its founder is also included. Anyone interested in having a single volume that contains some of the best research produced in this field will find this volume irresistible.

Contemporary Reconfigurations Of American Literary Classics written by Betina Entzminger and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Literary Criticism categories.

The number and popularity of novels that have overtly reconfigured aspects of classic American texts suggests a curious trend for both readers and writers, an impulse to retell and reread books that have come to define American culture. This book argues that by revising canonical American literature, contemporary American writers are (re)writing an American myth of origins, creating one that corresponds to the contemporary writer’s understanding of self and society. Informed by cognitive psychology, evolutionary literary criticism, and poststructuralism, Entzminger reads texts by canonical authors Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, Alcott, Twain, Chopin, and Faulkner, and by the contemporary writers that respond to them. In highlighting the construction and cognitive function of narrative in their own and in their antecedent texts, contemporary writers highlight the fact that such use of narrative is universal and essential to human beings. This book suggests that by revising the classic texts that compose our cultural narrative, contemporary writers mirror the way human individuals consistently revisit and refigure the past through language, via self-narration, in order to manage and understand experience.
