English summary: The Variae is, until now, the only of the great works of Latin culture to not have been completely translated into any modern language. The reason for this striking gap is due to the exceptional difficulty of the Latin cassiodoreo, which combines numerous written traditions with a personal and inventive style. In addition to providing the first complete translation of this text, this book also offers a vast commentary on the text. Italian description: Flavio Magno Aurelio Cassiodoro (490-583 d.C. circa) fu questore, console, maestro degli uffici, prefetto al pretorio di Teoderico e dei suoi successori sul trono del regno ostrogoto d'Italia. Animatore di una politica di collaborazione tra goti e romani nel nome di una condivisa civilitas, egli ha lasciato testimonianza della sua attivita di ministro dei re goti nella silloge da lui intitolata Variae, giunta a noi integra, in dodici libri, per un totale di 468 documenti. L' opera rappresenta una delle fonti principali per la storia dell' Italia e dell' Europa nella prima meta del VI secolo d.C.: ne risultano illuminati aspetti politici e istituzionali, amministrativi, diplomatici, sociali, economici, culturali e religiosi. Molti documenti risultano a tutt' oggi inesplorati dagli studiosi. Le Variae e l'unica tra le grandi opere della cultura latina a non essere stata mai tradotta integralmente in alcuna lingua moderna. Il motivo di questa sorprendente lacuna va ricercato soprattutto nella eccezionale difficolta del latino cassiodoreo, nel quale confluiscono numerose tradizioni che si uniscono a uno stile molto personale e inventivo. Oltre che per l' accuratissima traduzione, questa edizione si caratterizza per un vastissimo commento e per un apparato critico che reca elementi di novita.

Expanding the study of Etruscan habitation sites to include not only traditional cities but also smaller Etruscan communities, Cetamura del Chianti examines a settlement that flourished during an exceptional time period, amid wars with the Romans in the fourth to first centuries BCE. Situated in an ideal hilltop location that was easy to defend and had access to fresh water, clay, and timber, the community never grew to the size of a city, and no known references to it survive in ancient writings; its ancient name isn’t even known. Because no cities were ever built on top of the site, excavation is unusually unimpeded. Intriguing features described in Cetamura del Chianti include an artisans’ zone with an adjoining sanctuary, which fostered the cult worship of Lur and Leinth, two relatively little known Etruscan deities, and ancient wells that reveal the cultural development and natural environment, including the vineyards and oak forests of Chianti, over a period of some six hundred years. Deeply enhancing our understanding of an intriguing economic, political, and cultural environment, this is a compelling portrait of a singular society.
