Este libro es fruto de largos años de investigación y de trabajo colectivo en toda Argentina. Especialistas en sociología de la religión de distintas universidades nacionales de Buenos Aires, Cuyo, Rosario, Santiago del Estero y el Área Sociedad, Cultura y Religión del Centro de Estudios e Investigaciones Laborales del Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas iniciaron en 2005 la aventura académica de construir juntos y desde diversos espacios demográficos y sociales del país una investigación sobre las creencias religiosas en la Argentina. Faltaba una visión de conjunto que combinara estudios cuali y cuantitativos de las creencias de los ciudadanos. En 2008 se publicaron los primeros resultados que tuvieron alto impacto científico y mediático nacional e internacional, al mostrar las profundas recomposiciones en las creencias que se estaban dando en los habitantes de la Argentina: los católicos, los indiferentes y los evangélicos constituyen la mayoría, y los judíos, los islámicos, los afros y otros grupos religiosos completan el panorama. Luego de un trabajo de recopilación y análisis de datos, y de creación de nuevos conceptos y categorías sobre una temática de la que mucho se habla pero poco se había investigado hasta ahora, puede afirmarse que este libro amplía aquellos horizontes. Aquí se muestran las numerosas sociabilidades y subjetividades, las trayectorias, identidades y pertenencias múltiples de la actual pluralidad, y diversidad de creencias y convicciones en democracia, según regiones y temas específicos. Es un punto de llegada y al mismo tiempo abre nuevos caminos imprescindibles para comprender nuestra sociedad.

Han organizado y organizan los sistemas de representación, las normas de vida y las prácticas culturales, así como los territorios. Esta última dimensión es la que explora este Atlas de las religiones, concebido y realizado por geógrafos. Aunque resulte complejo, el enfoque geográfico permite, en primer lugar, localizar las religiones: ¿Qué hay que cartografiar? ¿La creencia, las prácticas, la pertenencia religiosa? En segundo lugar, el enfoque geográfico invita también a la reflexión sobre la inscripción espacial de la religión, del área homogénea al enclave o al gueto. Jugando con las escalas, los mapas del atlas revelan realidades religiosas conmovedoras y complejas: aunque un mapamundi opone normalmente una África musulmana y una África cristiana, en realidad, un buen mapa del continente africano ofrece una visión más matizada y muestra el lugar que ocupan las religiones autóctonas. Por otra parte, el hecho de inscribir en los mapas los conflictos étnico-religiosos aclara su comprensión. Gracias a más de cincuenta mapas y gráficos, y con la ayuda de los mejores especialistas de una determinada religión o de un espacio geográfico, este atlas ofrece una plataforma de lectura nueva y sintética del hecho religioso. Brigitte Dumortier es profesora de geografía en la Universidad de París IV-Sorbona y miembro del Laboratorio de Investigación “Espacio y Cultura” (París IV-CNRS). El atlas también ha contado con la participación de Madeleine Rouvillois, que ha impartido clases de geografía religiosa en la Universidad de París IV-Sorbona hasta 2001, y de Cécile Marín, diplomada por la Universidad de Orleáns, geógrafa, cartógrafa y profesora de cartografía en el instituto Maximilien –Vox. What does the practice of religion look like in Latin American today? In this book, which examines religious practice in three Latin American cities-- Lima, Perú; Córdoba, Argentina; and Montevideo, Uruguay-- Gustavo Morello reveals the influence of modernity on average citizens' cultural practices. Technological development, the dynamics of capitalism, the specialization of spheres of knowledge-- all these aspects of modernity were thought to diminish the importance of religion. Yet, Morello argues, if we look at religion as ordinary Latin Americans practice it, we discover that modernity has not diminished religion, but transformed it, creating what Morello calls "enchanted modernity." In Latin America, there is more religion than secularists expect, but of a different kind than religious leaders would wish. Morello explores how urban, contemporary Latin Americans, both believers and non-believers, from different social classes and religious affiliations, experience transcendence in everyday life. Using semi-structured interviews with 254 individuals in three cities with shifting religious landscapes and different cultural histories, Morello highlights the diversity within Latin America, exploring societies that are understudied and examining a broad array of religious traditions: "nones" (agnostics, non-affiliated, atheist), Catholics, Evangelicals (including mainstream Protestants, Pentecostals, neo-Evangelicals), and other traditions (including Jews, Muslims, Mormons, African-derived traditions, and Buddhists). Morello emphasizes elements, nuances, and dynamics that have previously been overlooked and that can enrich the study of religion other non-western societies. The book seeks to contribute to a critical theory of contemporary religion-- one that is not centered in the North Atlantic world and that takes seriously the voices of the Latin American people.

This volume ethnographically explores the relation between secularities and religious subjectivities.As a consequence of the demise of secularization theory, we live in an interesting intellectual moment where the so-called ‘post-secular’ coexists with the secular, which in turn has become pluralized and historicized.
