La quiebra de la ciudad popular intenta explicar por qué el mundo obrero y popular de Barcelona, capital indiscutible del sindicalismo revolucionario anarquista, mantuvo unas expectativas insurreccionales hasta finalizar los años de entreguerras. El texto examina la experiencia cotidiana del obrero en el espacio urbano en cuatro grandes campos: segregación residencial, vivienda, movilidad y sociabilidad. El análisis socioespacial desarrollado abre nuevos caminos en la comprensión del mundo obrero y popular barcelonés y muestra que el espacio urbano no fue un simple receptáculo inerte de los procesos políticos. La ausencia de movilidad social y de reformas significativas en vivienda, transporte y equipamientos constituyó el contexto ideal para el mantenimiento de expectativas revolucionarias en algunas capas obreras, especialmente en las menos cualificadas. El espacio urbano, la ciudad cotidiana, se ven en este libro como la auténtica variable explicativa de los conflictos que desembocaron en la Guerra Civil. La figura del jornalero inmigrante y de las periferias proletarias son el sujeto y escenario centrales del radicalismo cenetista. El inmigrante reciente no cualificado y los barrios donde esa figura obrera era dominante fueron los protagonistas del radicalismo revolucionario, la base social y espacial más destacada que estaba detrás de las jornadas de julio de 1936. Civil war conflict is a core development issue. The existence of civil war can dramatically slow a country's development process, especially in low-income countries which are more vulnerable to civil war conflict. Conversely, development can impede civil war. When development succeeds, countries become safer when development fails, they experience a greater risk of being caught in a conflict trap. Ultimately, civil war is a failure of development. 'Breaking the Conflict Trap' identifies the dire consequences that civil war has on the development process and offers three main findings. First, civil war has adverse ripple effects that are often not taken into account by those who determine whether wars start or end. Second, some countries are more likely than others to experience civil war conflict and thus, the risks of civil war differ considerably according to a country's characteristics including its economic stability. Finally, Breaking the Conflict Trap explores viable international measures that can be taken to reduce the global incidence of civil war and proposes a practical agenda for action. This book should serve as a wake up call to anyone in the international community who still thinks that development and conflict are distinct issues.

This book examines the effects of Jewish conversions to Christianity in late medieval Spanish society. Ingram focuses on these converts and their descendants (known as conversos) not as Judaizers, but as Christian humanists, mystics and evangelists, who attempt to create a new society based on quietist religious practice, merit, and toleration. His narrative takes the reader on a journey from the late fourteenth-century conversions and the first blood purity laws (designed to marginalize conversos), through the early sixteenth-century Erasmian and radical mystical movements, to a Counter-Reformation environment in which conversos become the advocates for pacifism and concordance. His account ends at the court of Philip IV, where growing intolerance towards Madrid’s converso courtiers is subtly attacked by Spain’s greatest painter, Diego Velázquez, in his work, Los Borrachos. Finally, Ingram examines the historiography of early modern Spain, in which he argues the converso reform phenomenon continues to be underexplored.
