Offrir un large panorama de l'histoire, politique et militaire, économique et sociale, religieuse et culturelle, des mondes musulmans médiévaux, de l'Antiquité tardive aux débuts de l'époque moderne, telle est l'ambition du présent Atlas, qui s'appuie sur près de deux cents cartes originales, à toutes les échelles, accompagnées de textes, d'extraits de sources et d'illustrations. Les conquêtes islamiques ont contribué à la formation d'un vaste ensemble de territoires où les musulmans ont détenu le pouvoir politique, dominant des peuples aux coutumes, langues et religions différentes. Il s'étendait sur trois continents – d'al-Andalus à l'ouest à l'Inde islamisée à l'est – et s'ouvrait sur deux espaces maritimes majeurs, la Méditerranée et l'océan Indien. Cet atlas explore les routes parcourues par les marchands, les pèlerins, les voyageurs, les étudiants et les savants ; il atteste de l'ampleur du phénomène urbain comme de la richesse des échanges dans l'ensemble de cette aire et rend compte de son insertion dans une économie-monde en formation. Les communautés musulmanes se sont séparées en différentes branches : les sunnites et les chiites, mais aussi en une myriade d'autres courants minoritaires qui marquent, jusqu'à nos jours, la topographie religieuse. Si les luttes fratricides furent importantes, les relations conflictuelles avec différents ennemis du dehors – conquêtes et jihad, croisades et invasions – ont remanié les équilibres internes comme les frontières extérieures. L'activité diplomatique qui se déploya, à travers toute l'Eurasie et de l'Atlantique au Pacifique, la circulation des idées et des modèles littéraires ou architecturaux, témoignent, au-delà des échanges commerciaux, de l'étendue des réseaux développés au cours des siècles. Les chercheurs qui ont réalisé cet ouvrage collectif, lancé au sein de l'équipe " Islam médiéval " du laboratoire Orient & Méditerranée (CNRS), sont spécialistes de différents champs de l'histoire médiévale des mondes musulmans. Ils et elles donnent à voir et à comprendre, dans une historiographie renouvelée, une histoire globale et connectée des mondes musulmans médiévaux.

Organized by the REHSEIS group (Research on Epistemology and History of Exact Sciences and Scientific Institutions) of CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), the colloquium was held from 3 to 6 April 1990 in the UNESCO building in Paris. This colloquium was an idea of Professor Roshdi Rashed who initiated this field of studies in France some years ago, and proposed "Sciences and Empires" as one of the main research programmes for the The project to organize such a colloquium was a bit REHSEIS group. of a gamble. Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.
