Obwohl das politische System in Iran durchaus demokratische Züge hat, betrachten die USA die Regierung in Teheran mit Skepsis. Doch auch im arabischen Raum selbst hat der schiitisch geprägte Iran mit außenpolitischer Isolation zu kämpfen, bedingt durch seinen Großmachtanspruch und den Versuch, die Revolution auch in die arabischen Nachbarstaaten zu tragen. Als Konsequenz dessen befindet sich das Land in einer wirtschaftlichen Misere und die Unzufriedenheit der Bevölkerung mit der herrschenden Regierung wächst. Seit einigen Jahren schaut die Welt mit Besorgnis auf die Entwicklungen in der Islamischen Republik. Das Atomprogramm der Iraner scheint nicht mehr nur friedlichen Zwecken zu dienen, obwohl dies von der Regierung in Teheran vehement bestritten wird. Besonders die USA befürchten, dass Iran im Geheimen schon lange Pläne für den Bau von Atomwaffen schmiedet. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, ob Iran tatsächlich nach der Atombombe strebt, was das für die Welt bedeuten würde und wie einzelne Akteure auf Teherans Ambitionen reagieren. Ein kurzer historischer Überblick bietet den Einstieg für die Thematik und soll die Hintergründe schildern, die zu Irans heutiger Situation geführt haben. Das Verhältnis der USA zu Iran ist dabei ein wichtiger Aspekt, da die Geschichte des Landes entscheidend vom Einfluss der Amerikaner in der Region geprägt wurde. Die Schilderung des historischen Hintergrunds leitet dann zu der zentralen Fragestellung dieser Arbeit hin, nämlich ob Iran tatsächlich auf dem Weg ist, ein atomares Pulverfass zu werden. Welche Indizien sprechen dafür und was spricht dagegen? Warum hat die iranische Regierung überhaupt ein Interesse daran, zu einer Atommacht aufzusteigen? An diese Fragen schließt sich eine weitere: Was würde es für das internationale System bedeuten, wenn Iran tatsächlich im Begriff wäre, Atomwaffen zu entwickeln? Der dritte Teil dieser Arbeit untersucht die Reaktionen des internationalen Systems auf die Ambitionen und das Verhalten der iranischen Regierung. Dabei ist wiederum die Beziehung zwischen Iran und den USA von Bedeutung. Wie reagieren die Amerikaner auf die mögliche Bedrohung und woraus erklärt sich ihr Verhalten? Welche Rolle spielt dabei Israel? Doch auch die Beziehungen zwischen der Europäischen Union und Iran sind von Bedeutung.

We are told that Western/Christian and Muslim/Arab civilizations are heading towards inevitable conflict. The demographics of the West remain sluggish, while the population of the Muslim world explodes, widening the cultural gap and all but guaranteeing the outbreak of war. Leaving aside the media's sound and fury on this issue, measured analysis shows another reality taking shape: rapprochement between these two civilizations, benefiting from a universal movement with roots in the Enlightenment. The historical and geographical sweep of this book discredits the notion of a specific Islamic demography. The range of fertility among Muslim women, for example, is as varied as religious behavior among Muslims in general. Whether agnostics, fundamentalist Salafis, or al-Qaeda activists, Muslims are a diverse group that prove the variety and individuality of Islam. Consequently, the first major part of this paper is dedicated to a brief study of the genre of fantastic literature in general, particularly the very problematic task of defining its distinctive characteristics. By looking at the fantastic tradition in America (particularly that of New England), including the prevalent features and themes marking the American variety of the fantastic, and highlighting the contribution some eminent American authors have made to the genre, the second part then focuses on the fantastic in American literature. Finally, the third major section of this paper provides a detailed study of the life and work of one of the chief American writers of fantastic prose fiction, H. P. Lovecraft. After an account of Lovecraft's life and personality (including some of the countless misconceptions circulating since his death), a critical evaluation of his literary achievement and influences, and a short discussion of his impact on modern popular culture, a large part of this section is dedicated to a thorough analysis of his unique concept of fantastic fiction: while certain aspects of his work inevitably link him to his literary precursors, there are others clearly setting him apart from any writer of the fantastic that came before him. The paper is concluded by brief case studies of three of Lovecraft's most popular short stories.
