A new 2024 translation of "Attempt to Introduce the Concept of Negative Quantities into World Wisdom" from the original German manuscript first published in 1763. The original German title is "Versuch den Begriff der negativen Größen in die Weltweisheit einzuführen". This new edition contains an afterword by the translator, a timeline of Kant's life and works, and a helpful index of Kant's key concepts and intellectual rivals. This translation is designed for readability, rendering Kant's enigmatic German into the simplest equivalent possible, and removing the academic footnotes to make this critically important historical text as accessible as possible to the modern reader. The early sections of the treatise discuss the utility of mathematical methods in philosophical reasoning, emphasizing the potential of mathematical concepts, such as negative quantities, to enhance metaphysical understanding. Kant critically evaluates existing philosophical methods and proposes the integration of mathematical precision into philosophical discourse. Kant delves into the mathematical understanding of negative numbers and explores their philosophical implications, arguing for their relevance beyond mere mathematical operations. The paper presents a detailed exploration of how negative quantities, understood mathematically, can contribute to a more nuanced understanding of metaphysical concepts. The paper also discusses the opposition between logical and real oppositions, drawing parallels and distinctions between mathematical and philosophical reasoning. Kant emphasizes the importance of considering both types of opposition in understanding philosophical problems, and argues that the concept of negative quantities offers a novel way of approaching these problems.

A student in class asks the math teacher: "Shouldn't minus times minus make minus?" Teachers soon convince most students that it does not. Yet the innocent question brings with it a germ of mathematical creativity. What happens if we encourage that thought, odd and ungrounded though it may seem? Few books in the field of mathematics encourage such creative thinking. Fewer still are engagingly written and fun to read. This book succeeds on both counts. Alberto Martinez shows us how many of the mathematical concepts that we take for granted were once considered contrived, imaginary, absurd, or just plain wrong. Even today, he writes, not all parts of math correspond to things, relations, or operations that we can actually observe or carry out in everyday life. Negative Math ponders such issues by exploring controversies in the history of numbers, especially the so-called negative and "impossible" numbers. It uses history, puzzles, and lively debates to demonstrate how it is still possible to devise new artificial systems of mathematical rules. In fact, the book contends, departures from traditional rules can even be the basis for new applications. For example, by using an algebra in which minus times minus makes minus, mathematicians can describe curves or trajectories that are not represented by traditional coordinate geometry. Clear and accessible, Negative Math expects from its readers only a passing acquaintance with basic high school algebra. It will prove pleasurable reading not only for those who enjoy popular math, but also for historians, philosophers, and educators. Key Features? Uses history, puzzles, and lively debates to devise new mathematical systems Shows how departures from rules can underlie new practical applications Clear and accessible Requires a background only in basic high school algebra

Of The Sensible And Intelligible Form And Principles Of The World written by Immanuel Kant and has been published by Newcomb Livraria Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Philosophy categories.

A new 2024 translation of Immanuel Kant's "Of the sensible and intelligible form and principles of the world" from the original Latin manuscript first published in 1770. The original Latin title is "De mundi sensibilis atque intelligibilis forma et principiis'. This is Kant's inaugural dissertation, which he had to write in Latin before taking up his position as full professor of logic and metaphysics at the University of Königsberg, and which he defended together with Marcus Herz on August 21, 1770. In this dissertation, Kant meticulously distinguishes between the sensory and the intellectual realms, along with the human cognitive faculties and principles associated with each. He identifies two distinct, non-interchangeable spheres and sources of knowledge: the sensual world (mundus sensibilis), which represents phenomena as they are perceived by the senses, and the intellectual world (mundus intelligibilis), which denotes the realm of independently existing mental content. Kant defines metaphysics as a philosophy that "embraces the fundamental principles for the application of pure reason"; it must rigorously ensure "that the principles of sense knowledge remain within their bounds and do not encroach upon the intellectual realm". In addition, in this work he introduces the concept that time and space are not objective realities, but rather forms of sensory intuition for finite beings that precede sensory experience - a concept also central to the Critique of Pure Reason. Conversely, the subjects of moral philosophy are "ascertainable only by pure reason".

Universal Natural History And Theory Of Heaven written by Immanuel Kant and has been published by Newcomb Livraria Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Philosophy categories.

A new 2024 translation of Kant's famous 1755 Universal Natural History and Theory of Heave (original German title "Allgemeine Naturgeschichte und Theorie des Himmels") from the original German manuscript. Immanuel Kant's Universal Natural History and Theory of Heaven is one of his first Philosophic works and puts on full display his impressive intellect. Even though he was not a scientist, Kant's Cosmogonic theories are strikingly accurate when compared to the theories of his peers. Here he postulates the Nebular Hypothesis on the formation and evolution of planetary systems, which is today the broadly accepted theory of planet formation. He was also correct in his assumption, which was unsubstantiated by observation at the time, that our Milky Way galaxy was only one of countless, which was only confirmed by the Hubble Telescope in the 1920’s. His theories about Exoplanets were likewise only recently confirmed by the Kepler missions. This is the epicenter of the chaos of the Enlightenment, and Kant’s theories are surprisingly rational and accurate. His philosophic commentaries here are a foreshadowing of his later monumental works of Enlightenment Epistemology.

A new 2024 translation of Immanuel Kant's "Dreams of a Ghost-Seer Explained by Dreams of Metaphysics" from the original German manuscript first published in 1766. The original German title is "Träume eines Geistersehers, erläutert durch Träume der Metaphysik". Kant’s 1766 “Träume eines Geistersehers, erläutert durch Träume der Metaphysik” is directed to the charlatan metaphysicians of his day, using Swedenborg's claims of spirit-visions as a central example. It is a cynical, scathing, and mocking criticism of Swedenborgian metaphysics, while simultaneously undermining the faulty Epistemology of Leibniz. Kant addresses “Mr. Schwedenberg” directly analyzes his works methodically. Carl Jung's philosophy is heavily influenced by German Transcendentalism, specifically this work as well, and continued Kant’s work of making the spiritual acceptable within a materialistic metaphysics. Kant and Hegel both articulate that the human psyche does not operate off of Presuppositional Rationalism, but Symbolism. Kant speaks of Archetypes guiding the pneumatic world. He is sketching out a response to the Aristotelian metaphysics of Hume while upholding the Scientific advances of the Enlightenment. He uses Occam’s Razor against Swedenborg, using reason to deconstruct his claims. But at the same time, he pushes back against a pure Newtonian mechanical, deterministic worldview: “For in the relations of cause and effect, of substance and action, philosophy serves at first to resolve the intricate phenomena and to bring such to simpler conceptions.” Schopenhauer wrote a much longer work modeled after this essay titled "Attempt on Spirit-Seeing and what is connected with it".

A new 2024 translation of Immanuel Kant's famous "Religion within the Limits of Mere Reason", from the original German manuscript first published in 1793. The original German title is "Die Religion innerhalb der Grenzen der bloßen Vernunft". Kant's "Religion within the Limits of Mere Reason" is one of his most accessible works due to its simplicity and basic lexicon. Here he writes about "the relationship of religion to human nature". Kant strove to fix both the Natural science and Theology by keeping them both in their respective dialectal parameters. Living through the heart of the Enlightenment, Kant observed the Epistemological problems brought about by One-World Newtonian Mechanical Reductionism, and the bad counter-reactions that Protestant apologists made. Like Hegel, Kant wants to restore faith as the "guardian of the speculative mysteries".

Groundwork For The Metaphysics Of Morals written by Immanuel Kant and has been published by Newcomb Livraria Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1948 with Philosophy categories.

A new 2024 translation of Immanuel Kant's "Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals" from the original German manuscript first published in 1785. Kant’s 1785 Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals is the union of the Critique of Pure Reason and his theoretical Natural Philosophy. It is a work of pure moral philosophy, at least his clearest, and is an architectonic framework for ethical action. Here in Groundwork, we see the development of the "maxim" of an action, or the subjective principle of volition, critical to the intellectual project of the "Kategorischen Imperatives. Morality arises from the individual’s self-legislation of practical reason and is universal and normative for all rational agents. This raised a formidable moral theory against Hume and the English Empiricists who promoted moral sense and teleological moral theories and would dominate the Philosophic world for a century. Still today, the Categorical Imperative has not been discredited and remains a central concept in modern ethics."
