Jahrhunderts in Ost-Mittel-Europa“.

Die Sprache Des Verschuldeten Menschen written by Daniel Cuonz and has been published by Brill Fink this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Debt in literature categories.

In the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008, an until then little noticed social type has moved into the focus of public interest: the indebted man. This book is about the long and various history of his representation in literature. At stake are the constraints, but also the opportunities of living a life determined by the intricate connection and the unclear relation between debt and guilt.

In 2004, late in her legendary career, Ágota Kristóf wrote this slim dagger of a memoir about being a refugee after fleeing Hungary in 1956 Narrated in a series of stark, brief vignettes, The Illiterate is Ágota Kristóf’s memoir of her childhood, her escape from Hungary in 1956 with her husband and small child, her early years working in factories in Switzerland, and the writing of her first novel, The Notebook. Few writers can convey so much in so little space. Fierce yet almost pointedly flat and documentarian in tone, Kristóf portrays with a disturbing level of detail and directness an implacable message of loss: first, she is forced to learn Russian as a child (with the Soviet takeover of Hungary, Russian became obligatory at school); next, at age twenty-one, she finds herself required to learn French to survive: I have spoken French for more than thirty years, I have written in French for twenty years, but I still don’t know it. I don’t speak it without mistakes, and I can only write it with the help of dictionaries, which I frequently consult. It is for this reason that I also call the French language an enemy language. There is a further reason, the most serious of all: this language is killing my mother tongue.

Letters From Turkey written by Keleman Mikes and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-24 with Social Science categories.

First published in 2000. Letters from Turkey, considered the best Hun,garian prose of the eighteenth century, is written by Kelemen Mikes, a Transylvanian nobleman who went into exile with Ferenc Rakoczi II, the Prince of Transylvania, after the War of Independence in 1704 - 1711 in which the Prince fought to preserve independent Transylvania. The Prince and his entourage spent some years in France, and were then invited to Turkey by Sultan Ahmed III, going there in 1717. Some of the party eventually left, but, like Rakoczi, Mikes spent the rest of life in exile in Turkey. This memoir had a considerable vogue in Transylvania at the time, and Mikes writes in a well-established tradition. The 207 letters, never before translated from Hungarian, were addressed over some forty years to an aunt in Constantinople. In them, Mikes speaks of the Hungarians' daily life, their hopes and disappointments, and of current events in Turkey and beyond; he describes the deaths of some of the party including that of the Prince himself. He also gives an account of a military campaign along the Danube and an embassy to Moldova, ranging over religious, historical and philosophical topics and recounting numerous anecdotes. All the while his patriotic feelings never leave him, nor does his affection, not unblinkered, for his Prince. The last letter, written four years before his death, sees him become head of the Hungarian community in Turkey, last survivor of the original band of Transylvanian nobles exiled to a far country.

Day In Day Out written by Terezia Mora and has been published by Harper Collins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-10-06 with Fiction categories.

In a scruffy park of a West European metropolis, a man in an ill-fitting trench coat is found hanging by the feet, half-dead. This is Abel Nema, the enigmatic yet fascinating protagonist of Terézia Mora’s internationally acclaimed novel, a linguistic phenomenon who can speak ten languages flawlessly but whose grip on reality is slowly slipping away. Since his self-imposed exile from his Balkan homeland ten years earlier, he has been making a life among fellow refugees: a group of bohemian jazz musicians, an eccentric student of ancient history, and a gang of young Gypsies. His acquaintances among the locals include a neighbor who claims to have visited heaven (and introduces Abel to hallucinogens), the sordid characters who frequent the neighborhood sex bar, and a wonderfully zany family he joins when, desperate to extend his residency permit, he enters into a fictive marriage. Yet through it all he remains strangely hollow: for all his languages he has little humanity to put into words. Day In Day Out, Terézia Mora’s fierce and beautiful debut novel, is at once an evocation of the newly multicultural Europe and an exploration of a deeply disturbed individual. It is a prose labyrinth of rare poetic force that marks its author as a major new voice in contemporary fiction.

This thesis consists of three parts; in the first part, parameter sets of the Non-Random Two-Liquid (NRTL) model for five challenging binary liquid-liquid equilibria (LLE) relevant to the cluster of excellence Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass (TMFB) are generated by means of the AVT.SVT in-house tool BOARPET (Bilevel Optimization Algorithm for Rigorous and Robust Parameter Estimation in Thermodynamics). In the 2nd part, the risks that may result from the aforementioned violation of thermodynamic criteria for process simulation are assessed, by means of several unit operation models in Aspen Plus, as well as flash simulations, formulated and solved in GAMS. The respective parameter sets are selected from the first part, either because these are found to result in violation of thermodynamics, or due to the particular shape of the implied Gibbs free energy curve with respect to composition. In the 3rd part, stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric formulations from literature for the simulation of combined diffusive and chemical equilibrium are compared using local and global solvers through GAMS, for the case study SBA/DSBE/water. The publication is made within the framework of a scientific cooperation at the Vilnius University of Technology/Lithuania.

Learned Societies Freemasonry Sciences And Literature In 18th Century Hungary written by Réka Lengyel and has been published by Lengyel Réka this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-26 with Literary Criticism categories.

The present collection of primary sources, comprised of printed and manuscript materials, offers a new approach to the history of learned societies and Freemasonry in Hungary in the 18th century. Materials include academic proposals, regulations of learned societies and reading circles, letters, pamphlets as well as Masonic constitutions, rituals, orations, essays, and a sentimental novel. In addition to the Latin- and German-language documents, some Hungarian-language sources of special importance are published in English translation. The sources in the first part of the collection illustrate the growing desire and ambition among Hungarian intellectuals for establishing national literature and science, and for raising the level of general literacy among the population. Starting from the diagnosis that, compared to other European countries, Hungary was quite backward in terms of cultivating the sciences, several people emphasized the need to raise the standards of public education, while others thought that establishing learned societies or scientific academies could change the situation. The examination of the history of learned and secret societies shows that in 18th-century Hungary social culture could develop within the framework of Freemasonry. The functioning learned societies and reading circles were established at the initiative of lodge members, and a large number of the authors of the proposals were also Freemasons. The establishment of learned societies was motivated by the ideas which were also the guiding principles of the Freemasons: spreading enlightenment, promoting the well-being of the people, and supporting the sciences and the arts. The editors intended to bring to an international audience the selected materials which warrant further research and examination.

Nation And Religion written by Peter van der Veer and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-06 with Religion categories.

Does modernity make religion politically irrelevant? Conventional scholarly and popular wisdom says that it does. The prevailing view assumes that the onset of western modernity--characterized by the rise of nationalism, the dominance of capitalism, and the emergence of powerful state institutions--favors secularism and relegates religion to the purely private realm. This collection of essays on nationalism and religion in Europe and Asia challenges that view. Contributors show that religion and politics are mixed together in complex and vitally important ways not just in the East, but in the West as well. The book focuses on four societies: India, Japan, Britain, and the Netherlands. It shows that religion and nationalism in these societies combined to produce such notions as the nation being chosen for a historical task (imperialism, for example), the possibility of national revival, and political leadership as a form of salvation. The volume also examines the qualities of religious discourse and practice that can be used for nationalist purposes, paying special attention to how religion can help to give meaning to sacrifice in national struggle. The book's comparative approach underscores that developments in colonizing and colonized countries, too often considered separately, are subtly interrelated. In addition to the editors, the contributors are Benedict R. Anderson, Talal Asad, Susan Bayly, Partha Chatterjee, Frans Groot, Harry Harootunian, Hugh McLeod, Barbara Metcalf, and Peter van Rooden.
