Questo volume raccoglie, com'è nella tradizione della Collana, gli esiti di un seminario promosso dal Dottorato di ricerca in Scienze della Rappresentazione e del Rilievo della Sapienza e rivolto alla Scuola nazionale di Dottorato. Il seminario, che si è svolto per via telematica avvalendosi di un avanzato sistema di videocomunicazione e video presenza, era rivolto in particolare alle scuole locali di Dottorato affiliate alla Scuola Nazionale. In continuità con precedenti iniziative, il Seminario ha affrontato i rapporti tra la tecnologia informatica e i fondamenti scientifici della rappresentazione ponendo in particolare l'attenzione sulla questione del rinnovamento della disciplina con l'obiettivo di monitorare, approfondire e proseguire il dibattito e gli studi sullo sviluppo di questa scienza e presentare ai giovani allievi italiani la necessità di rivedere lo statuto stesso della disciplina nella sua dimensione storica, come processo di ricerca e di scoperta in continuo sviluppo.

Cos'è la geometria descrittiva La geometria descrittiva è quella branca della geometria che consente la rappresentazione di oggetti tridimensionali in due dimensioni utilizzando uno specifico insieme di procedure. Le tecniche risultanti sono importanti per l'ingegneria, l'architettura, il design e nell'arte. La base teorica per la geometria descrittiva è fornita dalle proiezioni geometriche piane. La prima pubblicazione conosciuta sulla tecnica fu "Underweysung der Messung mit dem Zirckel und Richtscheyt", pubblicata a Linien, Norimberga: 1525, da Albrecht Dürer. L'architetto italiano Guarino Guarini fu anche un pioniere della geometria proiettiva e descrittiva, come risulta chiaramente dai suoi?Placita Philosophica (1665), Euclides Adauctus (1671) e Architettura Civile, anticipando il lavoro di Gaspard Monge (1746-1818), che di solito è accreditato con l'invenzione della geometria descrittiva. Gaspard Monge è solitamente considerato il "padre della geometria descrittiva" per via dei suoi sviluppi nella risoluzione dei problemi geometrici. Le sue prime scoperte avvennero nel 1765 mentre lavorava come disegnatore per fortificazioni militari, anche se le sue scoperte furono pubblicate più tardi.
