Si les littératures latine et castillane se sont très tôt intéressées à la figure du Cid, l'apparition de ce héros dans l'historiographie est assez tardive. Certes, les chroniques latines de la première moitié du XIIIe siècle rapportent quelques-uns de ses hauts faits, mais ce sont celles en castillan, postérieures à 1280, qui lui accordent une place de choix. Les épigones jouent un rôle essentiel dans ce processus de récupération de la matière cidienne, qu'il s'agisse de nouveaux épisodes bâtis autour de la figure de Rodrigo Díaz ou de passages résultant du réagencement de sources déjà connues. Comme dans toute écriture médiévale, continuité et rupture, loin de s'opposer, se conjuguent. L'assimilation différentielle de ces épigones cidiens dans la « Versión de 1283 » de la « Estoria de España », dans la « Versión de 1289 » et dans la « Crónica de Castilla » met en évidence une double évolution : celle des liens qui unissent le roi à Rodrigo, paradigme du bon vassal, et celle des dispositifs discursifs. C'est à un véritable renouvellement du genre historiographique que le processus de réécriture ouvre ici la voie.

Le Poème du Cid ou La Chanson du Cid (El Cantar de Mio Cid en espagnol ancien) est la plus vieille chanson de geste de la littérature espagnole ayant pu être conservée. Elle relate l'histoire du chevalier Le Cid et de la Reconquista, au cours de laquelle il a manifesté son héroïsme. À l'origine transmise simplement par voie orale, l'oeuvre fut mise par écrit en 1207 par un certain Per Abad. Ce manuscrit est conservé dans un codex du xive siècle à la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, mais comporte quelques incomplétudes. La première page manque, de même que deux autres au milieu de l'ouvrage. Le poème est écrit en castillan médiéval, ancêtre de l'espagnol moderne (à une époque où léonais et aragonais étaient encore des langues littéraires). Il relate les aventures épiques de Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, le conquérant du royaume de Valence. Le titre de l'oeuvre (Cantar de Mio Cid) est une invention contemporaine, le nom original donné par son créateur étant impossible à déterminer. Certains hispanophones, suivant le français, l'appellent plutôt El Poema del Cid, arguant que ce n'est pas une chanson de geste mais un poème constitué de trois chansons.

Keith Whinnom, Professor of Spanish and Deputy Vice-Chancellor in the University of Exeter, died on March 6, 1986. He was one of the leading hispanists of his generation, and a world authority on the literature of the reign of the Catholic Monarchs (and, in a quite different area, on pidgin and creole languages). The contributors to this memorial volume are all specialists in the literature of Keith Whinnom’s chosen period, and all had close links with him, through personal friendship, research collaboration, and correspondence. They include his most admired teacher, two young scholars whom he helped at the outset of their careers, and representatives of the academic generations in between; they come from Britain, Spain, the United States, Argentina and France.
