Umso erstaunlicher ist diese Einstellung gegenüber Mexiko, da der Beginn der wirtschaftlichen Öffnungs- und Reformpolitik gerade einmal 25 Jahren zurückliegt. Seit den frühen 1980er Jahren betreibt Mexiko diese wirtschaftliche Neuorientierung, die sich trotz der schwerwiegenden Tequila-Krise in den Jahren 1994/95 bisher beeindruckend entwickelt hat. Auch für die kommenden Jahre weist Mexiko ein beachtliches Wachstumspotential auf. Mittlerweile gilt das Land als einer der weltweit bedeutendsten Schwellenländer hinsichtlich Qualität der Wirtschaftspolitik als auch der Offenheit seiner Wirtschaft. Gerade auf dem Gebiet der Außenwirtschaft ist der dramatische Strukturwandel der mexikani-schen Wirtschaftsentwicklung besonders deutlich zu erkennen. So hat in den letzten 100 Jahren die mexikanische Außenwirtschaft zwei grundlegende Richtungswechsel erfahren: Die exportorientierte Phase des „desarollo hacia afuera“ wurde in den 1930er Jahren von der Phase des „desarollo hacia adentro“ abgelöst, die durch Binnenmarktorientierung und Protektionismus geprägt war. Ganz im Trend der Weltwirtschaft, insbesondere Lateinamerikas wurde diese Phase in den 1980er Jahre durch eine neuerliche Öffnung für den Weltmarkt abgelöst.

The development of EU enlargement has raised many thorny issues unanticipated by the framers of the EC Treaty. A significant upshot of these issues is that the concept of European identity – defined in terms of such factors as culture, history and economics – has supplanted the long-dominant theme of ‘widening and deepening,’ particularly since the Union’s expansion has become primarily eastward. The major contribution of this important book lies in its analysis of the conceptualization and perception of enlargement from various points of view, focusing on the concerns of stakeholders and the ‘identity’ conflicts and uncertainties incurred by enlargement initiatives. In the course of its presentation, it details the actual pre-accession Europeanization process and its complex history. Among the key elements discussed are the following: the conflict between ‘widening’ and ‘deepening’ and the effect on EU institutional reform; institutional requirements on candidate countries; pre-accession criteria and negotiations; administrative capacity, judicial capacity, and legal approximation in accession states; capacity of the EU to absorb new Member States; and EC law as part of European identity. In 2012, philosopher and public intellectual Slavoj Žižek published what arguably is his magnum opus, the one-thousand-page tome Less Than Nothing: Hegel and the Shadow of Dialectical Materialism. A sizable sequel appeared in 2014, Absolute Recoil: Towards a New Foundation of Dialectical Materialism. In these two books, Žižek returns to the German idealist G. W. F. Hegel in order to forge a new materialism for the twenty-first century. Žižek’s reinvention of Hegelian dialectics explores perennial and contemporary concerns: humanity’s relations with nature, the place of human freedom, the limits of rationality, the roles of spirituality and religion, and the prospects for radical sociopolitical change. In A New German Idealism, Adrian Johnston offers a first-of-its-kind sustained critical response to Less Than Nothing and Absolute Recoil. Johnston, a leading authority on and interlocutor of Žižek, assesses the recent return to Hegel against the backdrop of Kantian and post-Kantian German idealism. He also presents alternate reconstructions of Hegel’s positions that differ in important respects from Žižek’s version of dialectical materialism.
