Sous l'Ancien Régime, le service n'est pas un vain mot : servir le château, c'est participer au prestige du seigneur, et par conséquent concourir à l'organisation hiérarchique de toute la société. En fondant son étude sur la valeur d'usage des « bâtiments d'utilité », l'auteur fait revivre les coulisses du château, le service de la bouche, les écuries, la glacière... et met ainsi en perspective l'architecture spécifique des communs tels qu'ils ont été imaginés par les architectes parisiens. La séquence d'accès, la composition, le décor parfois suggestif de ces bâtiments sont analysés ici pour la première fois. Cette étude intègre également la fonction symbolique de la résidence seigneuriale en Île-de-France et le rôle essentiel des abords du corps de logis dont l'agencement détermine la nature même du château aristocratique face à l'avènement de la maison de campagne bourgeoise. L'approche nouvelle et originale proposée ici se fonde sur des sources inédites et une relecture minutieuse des traités d'architecture du xviiie siècle, auxquelles s'ajoute une riche iconographie.
