Da geschieht ein Attentat. 33 Angehörige eines Polizeiregiments werden getötet. 350 Römer jeden Alters werden in den Fosse Ardeatine als Repressalie getötet. Einer der Soldaten aus der Pension wird dazu aufgeboten und zerbricht daran. Sein Freund erzählt Jahre später in ergreifender Weise von der Menschlichkeit, die sie erfahren durften von Seiten des schweizerischen Ehepaares, das die Pension führte und jene Zeit in Angst und Bangen überlebte, weil sie ihren italienischen Schwiegersohn in einem abgeschlossenen Zimmer monatelang vor den deutschen Soldaten versteckt hielten. Eine trotz der Umstände jener Zeit feinfühlige, mit menschlicher Wärme geschriebene Erzählung. In einem Anhang schildert der Autor, wie es zu dieser Erzählung kam.
