Urbanisation is currently a worldwide phenomenon and is a key driver of environmental degradation. Its impact highlights the importance of urban forests, which provide valuable environmental, social, and economic benefits within urbanised landscapes. Street trees in particular, are integral in creating dynamic public spaces and improving the urban quality of life. In Auckland, New Zealand, street trees make up 9% of the urban forest canopy, and are under the jurisdiction of Auckland Council which aims to develop its street tree network through the Urban Ngahere (Forest) Strategy. However, a better understanding of the existing street tree population is required, in order to manage Auckland street trees effectively and maximize their potential. This study determined the ecological characteristics of Auckland street trees relative to potential, and several key factors driving any differences in species composition, stand structure and spatial distribution, and tree health. A total of 1407 established trees across 47 streets, as well as 168 recently planted trees, were surveyed throughout urban Auckland. There was a high level of street tree species richness, but an uneven abundance, both of which were dominated by exotic trees. Additionally, the street tree community may be vulnerable to myrtle rust due to the high proportion of Myrtaceae species, despite meeting the 10:20:30 rule for effective species diversity. Street tree abundance was identified to be at approximately 50% of full occupancy or stock in Auckland, and its spatial distribution was driven by socioeconomic affluence. The majority of street trees were small – medium sized, and consisted of an age distribution that will balance tree death and removal. The highest levels of street tree biomass were found in older, central suburbs. Furthermore, street trees in Auckland were generally in good health, with environmental variability acting as the main driver of health condition and growth rates, especially in young, recently planted trees. Management recommendations for street trees in Auckland included using native and a diverse range of species, planting specimens that are compatible with their site conditions, and increasing the general tree abundance, especially in areas of low socioeconomic status. The recommendations were well aligned with goals from Auckland’s Urban Ngahere (Forest) Strategy. This study also suggested establishing a municipal tree nursery and street tree database, as they could help improve future management operations in Auckland. Street trees play an undeniable role in providing benefits to Auckland residents, and further research will help guide future development and management to maximise its potential.

Dear Colleagues, The composition, structure and function of forest ecosystems are the key features characterizing their ecological properties, and can thus be crucially shaped and changed by various biotic and abiotic factors on multiple spatial scales. The magnitude and extent of these changes in recent decades calls for enhanced mitigation and adaption measures. Remote sensing data and methods are the main complementary sources of up-to-date synoptic and objective information of forest ecology. Due to the inherent 3D nature of forest ecosystems, the analysis of 3D sources of remote sensing data is considered to be most appropriate for recreating the forest’s compositional, structural and functional dynamics. In this Special Issue of Forests, we published a set of state-of-the-art scientific works including experimental studies, methodological developments and model validations, all dealing with the general topic of 3D remote sensing-assisted applications in forest ecology. We showed applications in forest ecology from a broad collection of method and sensor combinations, including fusion schemes. All in all, the studies and their focuses are as broad as a forest’s ecology or the field of remote sensing and, thus, reflect the very diverse usages and directions toward which future research and practice will be directed.
