Unfortunately, almost annual changes in the rules have necessitated substantial changes in the play, and rendered practically valueless the several exhaustive books published since 1908. It is reasonably hoped that the code of 108 laws adopted by the New York Whist Club in 1915 will remain unchanged. The principal changes in these laws to be noted by players accustomed to the older customs, are as follows: Low Spades have been eliminated; Spade now means Royal or Lily, and the latter terms are not used.
