Die Bundestagswahl 1998 hat zum ersten direkt durch Wahlen erzwungenen "Machtwechsel" in der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik geführt. Für die Wahl- und Einstellungsforschung stellt sich zum einen die Frage, welche Motive für diesen Wechsel ausschlaggebend waren. Zum anderen ist dies Anlass danach zu fragen, in welchem Ausmaß im vereinigten Deutschland weiterhin zwei getrennt Elektorate - eine westdeutsche und eine ostdeutsche Wählerschaft - existieren. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes, die aus zwei Tagungen des Arbeitskreises "Wahlen und politische Einstellungen" der Deutschen Vereinigung für Politische Wissenschaft (DVPW) hervorgegangen sind, analysieren konkurrierende Erklärungsansätze für die Entscheidung der Wähler bei der Bundestagswahl 1998 und untersuchen die Entwicklung der Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen ost- und westdeutschen Wählern. Analysiert werden verschiedene Aspekte der Wahlentscheidung, wie die Nichtwahl, das Stimmensplitting und die Wechselwahl. Although the distant origins of medieval Central Europe have enjoyed constant interest among historians, only marginal attention has been paid to the power and political prerequisites for the first Westernization, i.e. the gradual adoption of the values, norms and patterns of behavior of the Latin West by the communities (gentes) around the eastern edge of the Carolingian and subsequently Holy Roman Empires. Such a gap in knowledge, long overlooked, is now being filled by The Making of Medieval Central Europe: Power and Political Prerequisites for the First Westernization, 791-1122. While respecting the state of research and based on an original analysis of the sources, this book offers an informed reflection of a complex dialogue that was initiated after the collapse of the Avar Khaganate at the end of the 8th century and that, by the beginning of the 12th century, gave rise to a Central Europe that was Westernized (i.e. turned toward the West) yet in many ways distinctive. Another and no less important added value of this book is the author's conscious effort to overcome the narrow interpretive matrices defined by the national interests of the time.

When looking at pre-modern monarchical societies, one does not expect to observe fundamental dissent directed at the social order as such or at the political system. As a rule, criticism was limited to individual monarchs, their performance and decisions. While discontent could lead to insurrection and rebellion, which normally only culminated in the ruler being replaced by another monarchical figurehead, the subtler methods of voicing criticism were applied within a framework of legality, of a set of customs or of a code of rules of the game and intended to improve the performance of the incumbent or reform his conduct at court. The various forms of verbal or staged censure of rulers in pre-modern monarchical societies are the subject of this volume.
