Wahrend sie anfangs noch als Zeichenstift der Natur" galt (so der Titel des ersten vero ffentlichten Fotobandes von William Henry Fox Talbot), wurde ihr ontologischer Status im 20 Jahrhundert versta rkt hinterfragt, bis sie schliesslich - im digitalen Zeitalter angekommen - ihren Referenzbezug vollkommen verliert und als authentisches Dokument ausgespielt" hat. Einleitung Versucht man sich dem Phänomen der Fotografie zu nähren, so stößt man unweigerlich auf die weitverbreitete Annahme, dass sie etwas mit dem Tod zu tun habe. Und dies sogar in mehrfacher Hinsicht. Denn so figuriert sie einerseits als „Leiche des Moments“ , was Susan Sontag in Über Photographie bestärkt, wenn sie kommentiert: Es sei „ihre Strategie, lebendige Wesen in leblose Dinge zu verwandeln und leblose Dinge in lebendige Wesen“ . Andererseits ist die Einführung der Technik der Fotografie in gewisser Hinsicht ebenfalls als Mord aufzufassen. Einen solchen Standpunkt vertritt etwa William J. Mitchell, dessen These folgendermaßen lautet: „From the moment of its sesquicentennial in 1989 photography was dead – or more precisely, radically and permanently displaced – as was painting 150 years before“ . Dieser Äußerung lassen sich dabei gleich mehrere Erkenntnisse abgewinnen: So verweist Mitchell zunächst auf den Tod der Malerei, hervorgerufen durch niemand anderen als die Fotografie. Gleichsam stellt er heraus, dass die Fotografie nun von einem ähnlichen Schicksal bedroht wird, was bereits in dem Untertitel seines Buches The Reconfigured Eye anklingt, worin er den Beginn einer „Post-Photographic Era“ propagiert. Dabei wird nun die Fotografie ihrerseits zum Mordopfer. Als Täter tritt hier jedoch „die Digitalisierung und der allmächtige Computer“ auf den Plan. In eigentümlicher Weise wird somit, um es in den Worten Stieglers auszudrücken, die „für die Photographie oft bemühte Todesmetapher zur historischen Klammer ihrer Geschichte“ . Interessanterweise setzt Mitchell in seiner These vom Tod der Fotografie die beiden Umbruchsituation gleich, was sich darin manifestiert, dass er der „Differenz von analogem und digitalem Bild die gleiche Bedeutung [...] wie derjenigen zwischen einer Fotografie und einer manuell hergestellten Darstellung“ beimisst. Die klassische analoge Fotografie wird im Zuge der Digitalisierung in den Zustand einer obsoleten Kunst überführt, genau wie zuvor schon die Malerei. Thematisiert wird hier der Übergang von den analogen zu den digitalen Medien, der nicht selten als „welthistorische Zäsur“ bewertet wird, was wenig verwundert, denn so stellt die „Unterscheidung analog/digital [...] die medienhistorische und –theoretische Leitdifferenz der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts“ dar.
