In der internationalen Politik gilt der Aufstieg Chinas zur Supermacht als das vielleicht meistdiskutierte Thema der Gegenwart. Die in diesem Zusammenhang ausgedrckten Erwartungen der Beobachter decken dabei nahezu die gesamte Bandbreite an M”glichkeiten ab. Sie reichen von hoffnungsvollen Impulsen fr das internationale Wirtschaftssystem oder der Stabilisierung des amerikanischen Devisenmarktes ber politische Interessenverschiebungen von West nach Ost bis hin zu Befrchtungen ber einen neuen Kalten Krieg unter der Žgide der derzeitigen und der vielleicht neuen Supermacht, zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten und der Volksrepublik China. Weitgehend unbestritten steht die Vermutung, dass beide Staaten in mittlerer Zukunft einen enormen Einfluss in den internationalen Beziehungen ausben werden. Die meisten Arbeiten zu diesem Thema scheinen jedoch einen deskriptiven Ansatz zu verfolgen. Fr eine tiefgrndige Auseinandersetzung ist aber ein theoretisches Fundament zu w„hlen. Hierfr hat sich der Autor bei den Annahmen der beiden Neo-Theorien, des Neorealismus von Kenneth N. Waltz und dem Neoliberalismus von Robert O. Keohane bedient. Der Neorealismus, welcher als das wohl meistdiskutierte Theorem der Internationalen Beziehungen w„hrend des Kalten Krieges gilt, beinhaltete das Model der Bipolarit„t ? ein Gleichgewichtszustand zweier Machtbl”cke, welcher zu Frieden und Stabilit„t fhrt. Keohanes Neorealismus hingegen sieht Frieden und Stabilit„t als Ergebnis von Handels- und Abh„ngigkeitsbeziehungen zwischen Staaten an. In diesem Buch wird aufgezeigt, dass beide Theorien trotz differenzierter Ansichten, einer weitgehenden Nichtbeachtung der heutigen Forschungswelt sowie ihrem Unverm”gen, die Ver„nderungen um das Ende des Kalten Krieges richtig zu deuten, hilfreiche Annahmen fr zuknftige Entwicklungen aufbieten werden.
