The period of court absolutism and early capitalism extended from the end of the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. A new world view was created, along with a new type of individual possessing new economic orientations to the marketplace and new social attitudes deriving from such concerns. The unified political and religious world of medieval Europe broke into parts: national differentiation and religious options abounded. The autonomy of the nation-state created a need for new attitudes toward religious minorities, even despised ones such as the Jews. The court Jew phenomenon, as Selma Stern details, was inextricably linked to these larger developments, including the emancipation of Jews as a whole. Dr. Stern's work is an effort to reconstruct this unusual group of Jews who became politically and economically influential and through that mechanism were able to enhance Jewish community life as a whole. In his very existence the court Jew necessarily enlarged, beyond its original meaning, the concept of free expression in European societies.As the dominating idea of defending one church and one emperor collapsed under the weight of the new European system of power balances, a new conception of the Jew developed, one of a transforming agent in economic and political positions. With trade no longer condemned as sinful, collecting interest for loans no longer prohibited, and the merchant no longer compared to a thief, the Jewish money changer and tradesman came to be viewed in a more favorable light. In this new environment, the claims of Christianity remained supreme, but the rights of religious minorities were considered.At the time of the book's initial appearance, the Saturday Review hailed it as a "picturesque work giving evidence of great writing talent." The reviewer went on to note that "Dr. Stern's work provided exhaustive historical background of European Jewry - from 1650 to 1750 - that period during which the modern European genius emerged." Dr. Stern's work relies heavily upon European archives up to 1938, when the advances of Nazism made further work impossible. As a result, what was started in Europe was completed in America.

English summary: Most rulers in 17th and 18th century central Europe regarded the court Jew as an indispensable institution for strengthening their political and economic power. However Jewish logisticians, financiers, political advisers and diplomats, such as for example Joseph Suss Oppenheimer, Samuel Wertheimer and others were highly dependent on their princes. The German-Jewish historian Selma Stern (1890-1981) was the first person to analyze this ambivalent role of the European court Jew, combining interdisciplinary academic research with high literary standards. Written for a pre-war German audience, the book was banned by the Nazis and published in 1950 during the author's exile in the United States. It did however become a classic piece of European history, and has remained so until today. 50 years after its appearance, this volume is now being presented in German for the first time. Die Studie beschäftigt sich mit der höfischen Gelegenheitslyrik des 17. und frühen 18. Jahrhunderts am Beispiel des Dresdner Hofes August des Starken. Erstmals wird der Gelegenheitslyrik an den regierenden Adel eine systematische Untersuchung gewidmet, die die sozialen, politischen und literarischen Zusammenhänge dieser Gattung erhellt. Die Untersuchung basiert auf weitgehend unerschlossenen Quellen. Sie arbeitet mit fast 250 Gedichten den gesamten Textkorpus der an Friedrich August I. adressierten Casualgedichte auf. Auf Grund dieser regional, institutionell und zeitlich umgrenzten Fragestellung eröffnen paradigmatische Funktionsanalysen konkrete Einblicke in die Wirkungsabsichten und Funktionsmechanismen panegyrischer Casuallyrik an deutschen Territorialhöfen um 1700. Die Casualdichtung erweist sich als ein Teilbereich der multimedialen Selbstdarstellung und Prachtentfaltung der höfischen Kultur, und sie ist als solcher der Repräsentation des Regenten als ein idealer Herrscher verpflichtet. Indem die Gedichte diese soziale Rolle zeichnen und auf den konkreten Adressaten projizieren, wird der Fürstenspiegelcharakter panegyrischer Casuallyrik deutlich. Die Interpretationen repräsentativer Einzeltexte zeigen, daß theologische, politische und ästhetische Diskussionen der Zeit in panegyrische Casuallyrik Eingang finden. Erweisen sich die Gedichte aus dem Umkreis des Dresdner Hofes als eng an das tradierte Ideal des 'barocken Kriegsheros' gebunden, so rücken in Gottscheds Schaffen Zentralbegriffe der Wolffschen Sozial- und Staatstheorie in den Mittelpunkt der Regentenerziehung. Entgegen der verbreiteten Forschungsansicht wird die Panegyrik Gottscheds und der 'Deutschen Gesellschaft in Leipzig' als konsequente Weiterführung des sozialreformerischen Programms der Frühaufklärung erkennbar.
