Erst zu Beginn seiner 30er Lebensjahre hat er die Überzeugung entwickelt und gewonnen, dass für ihn und für die Menschen der Weg zu einem guten und glücklichen Leben im lebenslangen Bemühen besteht, zum dreifaltigen Gott der Bibel zu streben, sich mit ihm zu verbinden, ihm anzuhangen und mit aufrichtiger Frömmigkeit zu verehren. Diese Antwort auf die Frage nach dem Sinn des Lebens hat er nach einem alles andere als geradlinig verlaufenden Prozess der Gottes- und Selbstfindung gefunden. Dieser Prozess ist im Wesentlichen mit seiner Bekehrung und Taufe 386/387 innerlich abgeschlossen und bis kurz vor seiner Priesterweihe 391 gedanklich durchdrungen. Über 20 Jahre hat die geistig-geistliche Entwicklung von Augustinus gedauert. Sie führte zunächst weg vom anerzogenen christlichen Glauben und, auf Umwegen und mit schmerzhaften Erfahrungen, wieder zurück zum bekennenden und getauften Christen der rechtgläubigen katholischen Kirche. Mit dem neu gewonnenen Gottes-, Bibel-, Kirchen- und Selbstverständnis geht eine neue beschauliche und asketische Lebensform einher. Diese Phase, in der die Frühschriften entstehen, ist eine erste fruchtbare. Dazu gehört als letztes Werk auch seine Schrift „De vera religione“. In den Kapiteln 48 bis 55 hat er sein neu gewonnenes Sinnmodell zu Papier gebracht. Abschnitt vier ist deshalb der Frage gewidmet, wie Augustinus seine Position beschreibt, denkerisch entwickelt und philosophisch und biblisch begründet. Vor diesem Hintergrund zeigt die Arbeit auf, dass Augustinus der Überzeugung ist und bekennt, den Weg zu einem guten und glücklichen Leben für sich und die Menschheit gefunden zu haben, nämlich der einzig wahren Religion, dem Christentum mit Gott als dem trinitarischen Einen, anzuhangen.

What do we mean when we talk about 'being Christian' in Late Antiquity? This volume brings together sixteen world-leading scholars of ancient Judaism, Christianity and Greco-Roman culture and society to explore this question, in honour of the ground-breaking scholarship of Professor Gillian Clark. After an introduction to the volume's dedicatee and themes by Averil Cameron, the papers in Section I, `Being Christian through Reading, Writing and Hearing', analyse the roles that literary genre, writing, reading, hearing and the literature of the past played in the formation of what it meant to be Christian. The essays in Section II move on to explore how late antique Christians sought to create, maintain and represent Christian communities: communities that were both 'textually created' and 'enacted in living realities'. Finally in Section III, 'The Particularities of Being Christian', the contributions examine what it was to be Christian from a number of different ways of representing oneself, each of which raises questions about certain kinds of 'particularities', for example, gender, location, education and culture. Bringing together primary source material from the early Imperial period up to the seventh century AD and covering both the Eastern and Western Empires, the papers in this volume demonstrate that what it meant to be Christian cannot simply be taken for granted. 'Being Christian' was part of a continual process of construction and negotiation, as individuals and Christian communities alike sought to relate themselves to existing traditions, social structures and identities, at the same time as questioning and critiquing the past(s) in their present.

The relationship between Latitudinarian moral theology and eighteenth-century literature has been much debated among scholars. However, this issue can only be tackled if the exact objectives of the Latitudinarians' moral theology are clearly delineated. In doing so, Patrick Müller unveils the intricate connection between the didactic bias of Latitudinarianism and the resurgent interest in didactic literary genres in the first half of the eighteenth century. Transparency and Dissimulation analyses the configurations of ancient neoplatonism in early modern English texts. In looking closely at poems and prose writings by authors as diverse as Thomas Wyatt, Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, John Donne, Edward Herbert, Andrew Marvell, Thomas Traherne, Thomas Browne and, last not least, Aphra Behn, this study attempts to map the outlines of a neoplatonic aesthetics in literary practice as well as to chart its transformative potential in the shifting contexts of cultural turbulency and denominational conflict in 16th- and 17th-century England. As part of a “new”, contextually aware, aesthetics, it seeks to determine some of the functions neoplatonic structures – such as forms of recursivity or certain modes of apophatic speech – are capable of fulfilling in combination and interaction with other, heterogeneous or even ideologically incompatible elements. What emerges is a surprisingly versatile poetics of excess and enigma, with strong Plotinian and Erigenist accents. This appears to need the traditional ingredients of petrarchism or courtliness only as material for the formation of new and dynamic wholes, revealing its radical metaphysical potential above all in the way it helps to resist the easy answers – in religion, science, or the fashions of libertine love.
