Mainittakoon, että, paitsi Augustinuksen Jumalan valtio XI kirjaa, Valtteri Olli on aikaisemmin kääntänyt latinasta suomeen Augus-tinuksen Herramme Vuorisaarnan (De sermone Domini in monte) v. 1989, ja Augustinuksen Kristillisen opetuksen (De doctrina Christiana) v. 2009, toinen painos 2020. Myös v. 2014 julkaisemansa pro gradu -työnsä jälkitarkastelu, nimeltä: V Olli, Kirkkoisä Augustinuksen syntikäsitys Confessiones -teoksessa, sisältää hänen omien lausuntojen suomennoksia, kun Augustinus esittelee teoksiaan, elämäänsä ja oppiaan. Tämä V. Ollin teos tarkastelee Augustinuksen opetuksia erityisesti kristin-uskolle keskeisen synnnin ja armon -opin kannalta. Teos sisältää myös luettelon ja esittelyn Augustinuksen koko tuotannosta ja vaikutuksista. WSOY julkaisi prof. H Koskenniemen suomennoksen teoksen kymmenestä ensimmäsestä osasta v. 2003.

Aurelius Augustinuksen teoksista pääteoksiaan ovat kaksi: Tunnustuksia, Confessiones, ja Jumalan valtio, De civitate Dei. Jumalan valtio -teoksen kymmenen ensimmäistä osaa eli kirjaa käsittelevät Jumalan hallintoa antiikin pakanallisten kulttuurien piirissä. Augustinus sai tämän työn loppuun v. 417 mennessä, ja hän alkoi silloin käsitellä Jumalan hallintaa maailman historiassa kristinuskon kautta kirjoissa 11 viiva 22. Tämä käsillä oleva 11. kirja muodostaa johdannon tähän työhön, ja tehtiin v. 417. Kristinuskon osuutta käsittelevät 12 osaa tulivat valmiiksi vuoteen 427 mennessä. Teoksella on maailmanhistoriallinen merkitys, ja kristinuskon kannalta tämä jälkiosa on mielenkiintoisin. Alkuosan suomennoksen WSOY julkaisi v. 2013, jälkiosa on toistaiseksi suomentamaton, paitsi nyt käsillä oleva 11. kirja. Ikään kuin näytteeksi siitä, kuinka mielenkiitoisia asioita Augustinus opettaa jo tässä johdannossaan, kirjassa XI, kun hän käsittelee Raamatun ensimmäistä lukua, luomista, elämän eri tasoja ja kristinuskon peruskäsityksiä, kuten pyhää Kolminaisuutta, hyvän ja pahan lähtökohtia, tiedon, uskon, toivon ja rakkauden perusteita, luomakunnan ja hengellisten asioiden keskinäisiä suhteita, Valtteri Olli on nyt kääntänyt kyseisen kirjan kielellemme. Teoksellaan Augustinus valaisee, paitsi Raamattua ja sen auktoriteetteja, myös historiallisten henkilöiden esittämiä näkemyksiä ja filosofioita. Wielding their swords in the name of their faith, the crusaders originally set out to reclaim Jerusalem and its surrounding territory in the Middle East. Increasingly, however, Eastern Europe and the last remaining bastions of pagan Europe became the targets of their religious zeal. The era officially began in 1147, when the Saxons, Danes, and Poles, responding to Pope Eugene III's call, initiated a crusade against the Wends of the Southern Baltic. This was followed by crusades against the Livonians, Estonians, Finns, Prussians, and Lithuanians. By the 13th century much of the responsibility for sustaining these crusades fell to the Teutonic Knights, a military order formed in the Holy Land in 1190. They were aided by the constant support of the Roman pontiff and by a steady flow of mercenaries from throughout Christendom. The subsequent Scandinavian campaigns laid the foundations of modern Baltic society by destroying pagan rural farming settlements, and establishing fortified Christian towns and major castles. As with the majority of crusades, the prospective acquisition of land and power was the one of the key driving forces behind these bloody military expeditions. This book reveals the colorful history of these Crusades when the soldiers of the Pope fought their way across Eastern Europe and inexorably changed the future of the continent.

Descartes thought that we could achieve absolute certainty by starting with radical doubt. He adopts this strategy in the Meditations on First Philosophy, where he raises sweeping doubts with the famous dream argument and the hypothesis of an evil demon. But why did Descartes think we should take these exaggerated doubts seriously? And if we do take them seriously, how did he think any of our beliefs could ever escape them? Janet Broughton undertakes a close study of Descartes's first three meditations to answer these questions and to present a fresh way of understanding precisely what Descartes was up to. Broughton first contrasts Descartes's doubts with those of the ancient skeptics, arguing that Cartesian doubt has a novel structure and a distinctive relation to the commonsense outlook of everyday life. She then argues that Descartes pursues absolute certainty by uncovering the conditions that make his radical doubt possible. She gives a unified account of how Descartes uses this strategy, first to find certainty about his own existence and then to argue that God exists. Drawing on this analysis, Broughton provides a new way to understand Descartes's insistence that he hasn't argued in a circle, and she measures his ambitions against those of contemporary philosophers who use transcendental arguments in their efforts to defeat skepticism. The book is a powerful contribution both to the history of philosophy and to current debates in epistemology.
