Roma è stata la città più grande, magnifica e gloriosa ma anche menzognera e insensibile. Tutto ha inizio in una mattina di giugno, un giovane uomo, il cui nome non conta, affascinato dalla vita di Cesare Augusto, si mette in testa di scrivere la sua biografia, e decide di chiedere aiuto a Marco Valerio Messalla, suo lontano cugino, che lo indirizza a sua volta a Tuscolo dalla persona giusta, ovvero Asinio Pollione. Partito con una idea e una trama precisa in testa, ben presto si ritrova a fare i conti con una amara scoperta poiché, i libri sui quali ha studiato “non sono stati scritti seguendo le buone regole che ogni storico deve seguire, ma sono nient’altro che un panegirico senza una briciola di verità dietro. Tutta roba che vale due soldi e forse neanche quelli. Roba che manca di onestà intellettuale, cioè della qualità più importante per un libro di storia. Ma forse è proprio l’onestà intellettuale il difetto più madornale di questa nostra società. Perché i potenti la temono come la gramigna”. E per scrivere davvero la storia così com’è ci vuole davvero coraggio e determinazione. Massimo Brambilla è nato a Milano, nell’ottobre del 1957, ma ha sempre vissuto in un piccolo paese dell’hinterland. Fin dal Liceo ha avuto una passione per la letteratura, ma ha deciso di diventare un dottore, medico della Mutua, come si diceva una volta. Dopo una trentina d’anni dalla laurea, la sua Musa sonnacchiosa si è svegliata all’improvviso, e soprattutto non si è esaurita con queste pagine. Ha continuato e continua ancora a scrivere e a fare il medico anche. A tuffarsi nei sentimenti, nelle gioie e nelle paure più nascoste dei suoi pazienti, e a imparare. Imparare i segreti della vita per riversarli nei suoi libri.
