Frutto di una ricerca condotta su tutto il patrimonio artistico pugliese, la mostra presenta oggetti d'arte (sculture, dipinti, tessuti sacri, argenti) di grande valore, tutti commissionati fra il XII e il XVIII secolo dalle confraternite della regione. Il fenomeno delle confraternite religiose ha dato luogo infatti a una vasta e capillare opera di edificazione: chiese, oratori, cappelle venivano usate dai confratelli per il culto, ma anche come aule assembleari, e quindi riccamente addobbate e decorate con opere assai pregevoli. Le confraternite vennero assumendo allora un ruolo fondamentale nella committenza e nella conservazione di un patrimonio inestimabile: altari e tabernacoli in marmi policromi, sculture, opere d'oreficeria e, soprattutto, dipinti.
