Auschwitz Explained To My Child written by Annette Wieviorka and has been published by Da Capo Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-09-26 with History categories.

How does one broach with a child or young adult a subject like the Holocaust, the full magnitude and horror of which are difficult even for many adults to comprehend? This book, in conversational format, offers an ideal way to present this difficult subject to a young audience. At the book's opening, the author and her daughter Mathilde meet Berthe, a friend of the author's, on the beach, where they see the number that was tattooed on Berthe's arm at Auschwitz. The book, following Wieviorka's answers to her daughter's nearly eighty questions, provides a concise yet unsentimental and unsparing history lesson that explains Hitler's rise to power and the rise of anti-Semitism, the creation of ghettos and concentration camps (not only Auschwitz), the genocide of the Jews, the "Final Solution," Jewish and other resistance, and the guilt of the Germans.

Fascism Vulnerability And The Escape From Freedom written by and has been published by punctum books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Political Science categories.

A worldwide struggle between democracy and authoritarianism set against a backdrop of global surveillance capitalism is unmistakable. Examples range from Myanmar, China, and the Philippines to Hungary, Turkey, Russia, and the United States. Fascism, Vulnerability, and the Escape from Freedom offers a multidisciplinary analysis drawing on psychology and literature to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that drive people to abandon democracy in favor of vertically organized authoritarianism and even fascism. In a comparative study of texts selected for their insights and occasional blind spots regarding fascist experiments of the past 100 years, Delogu examines fascism’s exploitation of fear (of change, loss, and death), disruption, and extreme inequality. The book offers an accessible and persuasive argument linking fascist authoritarianism, also called “right-wing populism,” to certain underlying conditions, such as a rise in us-versus-them thinking; distrust or simple apathy regarding democratic institutions, norms, and results; the vulnerabilities that result from extreme inequality (economic, social, racial); and addictions and codependency. Stressful events, such as a pandemic, an environmental disaster, or deep recession aggravate these harmful factors and make the fascist temptation, including the use of violence, almost irresistible. Delogu’s distinctive examination of texts that plumb the unconscious reveal linkages between actions and unavowable motives that purely historical and theoretical studies of fascism leave out. Erich Fromm’s neglected 1941 classic Escape from Freedom serves as a key reference in Delogu’s study, as does Robert Paxton’s authoritative history, The Anatomy of Fascism (2004). After underscoring the argument and urgent context around these two studies (Hitler’s Germany and George W. Bush’s post-9/11 America), Delogu examines novels, a diary, memoirs, and manifestos to show how vulnerability forces individuals to choose between exclusionary fascist authoritarianism and inclusive, collaborative democracy.

Everything Is Cinema written by Richard Brody and has been published by Macmillan + ORM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-05-13 with Performing Arts categories.

From New Yorker film critic Richard Brody, Everything Is Cinema: The Working Life of Jean-Luc Godard presents a "serious-minded and meticulously detailed . . . account of the lifelong artistic journey" of one of the most influential filmmakers of our age (The New York Times). When Jean-Luc Godard wed the ideals of filmmaking to the realities of autobiography and current events, he changed the nature of cinema. Unlike any earlier films, Godard's work shifts fluidly from fiction to documentary, from criticism to art. The man himself also projects shifting images—cultural hero, fierce loner, shrewd businessman. Hailed by filmmakers as a—if not the—key influence on cinema, Godard has entered the modern canon, a figure as mysterious as he is indispensable. In Everything Is Cinema, critic Richard Brody has amassed hundreds of interviews to demystify the elusive director and his work. Paying as much attention to Godard's technical inventions as to the political forces of the postwar world, Brody traces an arc from the director's early critical writing, through his popular success with Breathless, to the grand vision of his later years. He vividly depicts Godard's wealthy conservative family, his fluid politics, and his tumultuous dealings with women and fellow New Wave filmmakers. Everything Is Cinema confirms Godard's greatness and shows decisively that his films have left their mark on screens everywhere.

The Crime Of Destruction And The Law Of Genocide written by Caroline Fournet and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-16 with Law categories.

This highly original work provides a thought-provoking and valuable resource for researchers and academics with an interest in genocide, criminology, international organizations, and law and society. In her book, Caroline Fournet examines the law relating to genocide and explores the apparent failure of society to provide an adequate response to incidences of mass atrocity. The work casts a legal perspective on this social phenomenon to show that genocide fails to be appropriately remembered due to inherent defects in the law of genocide itself. The book thus connects the social response to the legal theory and practice, and trials in particular. Fournet's study illustrates the shortcomings of the Genocide Convention as a means of preventing and punishing genocide as well as its consequent failure to ensure the memory of this heinous crime.

In Lieu Of Memory written by Thomas Nolden and has been published by Syracuse University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-23 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book provides a wide-ranging analysis of French Jewish authors born after the Shoah and traces the development of the rich agenda of jeune littérature juive (young Jewish writing) from its beginnings in the late 1970s, into the 1980s and 1990s, when it gained intense momentum. Thomas Nolden uses a wealth of biographical information to expound on his central thesis: the abrupt interruption of transmission of the Jewish heritage by assimilation, migration, and near-extermination required these writers to reinvent themselves, their past, and their memories as Jews. Nolden provides concise readings of the fiction of more than two dozen writers of both Sephardic and Ashkenazi background living in present-day France. He demonstrates how contemporary Jewish writing has responded historically, culturally, politically, and aesthetically to developments in French society and in Jewish culture. His critical analysis of the major themes, concerns, and stylistic features of the authors' work connects Jewish writing in France to the traditions of Jewish writing both during the Diaspora and in Israel.
