Privacy is a widely debated concept today, and a paramount concern for modern societies: the ideas and prerogatives that it encapsulates are considered, nowadays, to be essential human rights and key issues when defining the mutual relationship between the individual and society at large. In order to investigate the boundaries and nuances of privacy in the Roman society, the city of Pompeii provides a rare case in point, due to the extraordinary concentration and readability of contextual archaeological data. The aim of this volume which originated from an International Workshop held at the Center for Advanced Studies of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, is to contribute to a better knowledge of the domestic space in Pompeii and other cities of the Roman world as mirrored by the interplay between individual and social spaces. To this purpose, a small group of researchers from a variety of backgrounds and traditions have been invited to contribute papers on different aspects of privacy, emphasizing diversity in methodologies and approaches.

Diese Studie setzt sich kritisch mit der aktuellen Emotionsforschung auseinander. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet die Frage nach den Erkenntnisinteressen und -möglichkeiten der kulturwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen. Dabei zeigt sich die Notwendigkeit, die zeichentheoretischen Implikationen emotionstheoretischer Positionen zu überdenken. Ebenso dringlich stellt sich die Frage nach den Gegenstandsbereichen geschichtswissenschaftlicher Emotionsforschung. This book traces the toga's history from its origins in the Etruscan garment known as the tebenna, through its use as an everyday garment in the Republican period to its increasingly exclusive role as a symbol of privilege in the Principate and its decline in use in late antiquity. It aims to shift the scholarly view of the toga from one dominated by its role as a feature of Roman art to one in which it is seen as an everyday object and a highly charged symbol that in its various forms was central to the definition and negotiation of important gender, age and status boundaries, as well as political stances and ideologies. It discusses the toga's significance not just in Rome itself, but also in the provinces, where it reveals ideas about cultural identity, status and the role of the Roman state. The Toga and Roman Identity shows that, by looking in detail at the history of Rome's national garment, we can gain a better understanding of the complexities of Roman identity for different groups in society, as well as what it meant, at any given time, to be 'Roman'.

The book concerns female dress in Roman life and literature. The main focus is on female Roman dress as it may have been worn in daily life in Rome and in a social environment influenced by Roman culture in the time from the beginnings of the Republic until the end of the 2nd century AD. There is, however, a certain surplus as to its contents because many Latin texts also talk about mythical Greek dress and the largely fictional early Roman dress. Altogether, large parts of the history of Roman dress are only known to us through what scholars thought about it in Classical and Late Antiquity. For this reason, this book is not only about real female Roman dress, but also about the ancient pseudo-discourse on early female Roman dress, which has been taken too seriously by modern scholarship. This pseudo-discourse has been mixed together with real facts to produce an ahistorical fabric. It therefore appeared necessary to break with this old tradition and to take a completely new path. The detailed analysis of many texts on female Roman dress is the basis of this new handbook meant for philologists, historians, and archaeologists alike.
