An estimated 76 million people worldwide are affected by autism--current figures suggest that 1 in 100 people live somewhere along the autism spectrum, though many remain undiagnosed. Frequently, autism occurs alongside other conditions, such as anxiety or depression. Yet despite autism's prevalence and impact, the church remains slow to adapt, with responses that are often poorly informed and irresponsible. In Autism and the Church Grant Macaskill provides a careful, attentive, and sustained analysis of the reality of autism within the church and how this should be approached theologically. Macaskill demonstrates that attempts to read the Bible with reference to autism are often deficient because they move too quickly from the study of particular texts to claims about the condition and how it should be viewed. This leads some Christians to see autism as something that should be healed or even exorcised. "The purpose of this doctoral project is to explore ways that churches can support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families. Through a review of literature and by interviews with both parents and service providers, the needs and challenges of these families who have children with ASD were examined, particularly within the context of their inclusion in faith communities. Using the Appreciative Inquiry method for interviewing, the research uncovered the fact that the majority of churches lack an awareness of autism, and do not know how to respond to the needs and struggles of families who have children with ASD. With that understanding, a training program was developed for church leadership and volunteers that would help volunteers to appropriately support children with ASD and their families, and to facilitate the establishment of a positive attitude towards inclusion within their faith communities. As important as increased awareness of ASD is, it is just as necessary for the church to have an intentional and continuous commitment for inclusion. Inclusion is an inner attitude of acceptance, realizing that these children with ASD and their families are members of the body of Christ, and the "unexpected guests" of God's banquet. Faith communities need to consciously acquire the skills and kindle the passion to live out this vision. Congregations who receive proper practical training to support hospitality to families with children on the autism spectrum will have the confidence and motivation to do the welcoming. Five recommended practical ministry implications were identified by this project for future training of church congregations, in order for them to be come more like God's banquet, where all are welcomed. If churches heed Christ's command to extent God's welcome to everyone who enters their doors, they will grow into inclusive communities where everyone is welcome, and everyone belongs." -- Abstract.
