L’ultimo libro scritto e pubblicato da Oscar Wilde prima di morire è un’opera che non si lascia classificare facilmente. Composto dopo la sua scarcerazione il 19 maggio 1897 dalla prigione di Reading, in cui lo scrittore era stato rinchiuso in seguito alla condanna a due anni ai lavori forzati con l’accusa di omosessualità, venne pubblicato, di comune accordo fra autore ed editore, sotto lo pseudonimo C.3.3. (blocco C piano 3 cella 3), il codice con cui Wilde era identificato durante la sua permanenza in carcere. La vicenda narrata, in forma di poema, trae spunto da quanto accadde realmente a un compagno di prigione dello scrittore, il soldato Charles Thomas Wooldridge, condannato a morte per aver ucciso sua moglie a causa di una folle gelosia. Narra dunque delle ultime tre settimane di vita di un detenuto, dei momenti di lavoro e dell’ultima birra, ma soprattutto mette in scena la convinzione di Wilde che tutti noi siamo in fondo delinquenti, e meritiamo maggiore carità per la gravità dei nostri crimini. Tanto una ballata sull’amore maledetto quanto una storia gotica, animata da spettri e catene. Ma anche una straziante poesia militante, che cerca di illuminare lo sguardo del lettore sulla violenza delle prigioni e l’inutilità della pena di morte. Le illustrazioni realizzate da Frans Masereel dialogano con i versi di Wilde, scandendo il ritmo della ballata e rendendo ancora più concreti gli orrori e le strazianti umanità narrate dallo scrittore.
