Visual Tracking in Conventional Minimally Invasive Surgery introduces the various tools and methodologies that can be used to enhance a conventional surgical setup with some degree of automation. The main focus of this book is on methods for tracking surgical tools and how they can be used to assist the surgeon during the surgical operation. Various notions associated with surgeon–computer interfaces and image-guided navigation are explored, with a range of experimental results. The book starts with some basic motivations for minimally invasive surgery and states the various distinctions between robotic and non-robotic (conventional) versions of this procedure. Common components of this type of operation are presented with a review of the literature addressing the automation aspects of such a setup. Examples of tracking results are shown for both motion and gesture recognition of surgical tools, which can be used as part of the surgeon–computer interface. In the case of marker-less tracking, where no special visual markers can be added to the surgical tools, the tracking results are divided into two types of methodology, depending on the nature and the estimate of the visual noise. Details of the tracking methods are presented using standard Kalman filters and particle filters. The last part of the book provides approaches for tracking a region on the surgical scene defined by the surgeon. Examples of how these tracking approaches can be used as part of image-guided navigation are demonstrated. This book is designed for control engineers interested in visual tracking, computer vision researchers and system designers involved with surgical automation, as well as surgeons, biomedical engineers, and robotic researchers.

In recent years, the demand for processing of biomedical images has been steadily growing due to an emerging developments of imaging tools in biomedical area. The main task of this book was to reconstruct the 3D image of a mouse axon from its 2D cross-section images. New mathematical methods were designed to achieve this. The 3D reconstruction involves three steps: preprocessing, segmenting and tracking of the images. For each step, commonly used methods have been applied but the results were unsatisfactory, hence a new method for each step was designed. The newly designed methods not only work well in the mice axon reconstruction, but also can be applied to other images of similar tasks. The flowcharts provided in this book could be generalized to many application, and therefore, will be of importance to academics, researchers and practitioners in a wide range of disciplines that require 3-D reconstruction as well as image segmentations.

This edited book explores the use of technology to enable us to visualise the life sciences in a more meaningful and engaging way. It will enable those interested in visualisation techniques to gain a better understanding of the applications that can be used in visualisation, imaging and analysis, education, engagement and training. The reader will also be able to learn about the use of visualisation techniques and technologies for the historical and forensic settings. The chapters presented in this volume cover such a diverse range of topics, with something for everyone. We present here chapters on 3D visualising novel stent grafts to aid treatment of aortic aneuryms; confocal microscopy constructed vascular models in patient education; 3D patient specific virtual reconstructions in surgery; virtual reality in upper limb rehabilitation in patients with multiple sclerosis and virtual clinical wards. In addition, we present chapters in artificial intelligence in ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia; carpal tunnel release visualisation techniques; visualising for embryology education and artificial intelligence data on bone mechanics. Finally we conclude with chapters on visualising patient communication in a general practice setting; digital facial depictions of people from the past; instructor made cadaveric videos, novel cadaveric techniques for enhancing visualisation of the human body and finally interactive educational videos and screencasts. This book explores the use of technologies from a range of fields to provide engaging and meaningful visual representations of the biomedical sciences. It is therefore an interesting read for researchers, developers and educators who want to learn how visualisation techniques can be used successfully for a variety of purposes, such as educating students or training staff, interacting with patients and biomedical procedures in general.

This research focuses on enhancing the impact of 3D medical images through the application of segmentation techniques. 3D medical imaging plays a critical role in diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgical interventions. However, the complexity and size of 3D medical images can pose challenges in accurate interpretation and analysis. The study aims to enhance the impact and utility of 3D medical images by implementing advanced segmentation techniques. These techniques involve the extraction and delineation of specific structures or regions of interest within the images, such as organs, tumors, or blood vessels. The research will explore various segmentation methods, including region-based, boundary-based, and deep learning-based approaches. By effectively segmenting 3D medical images, the proposed techniques can improve visualization, facilitate quantitative analysis, and support more precise surgical interventions. The study will evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the enhanced segmentation techniques using metrics such as Dice coefficient, Jaccard index, and accuracy. The outcomes of this research have the potential to significantly impact the field of medical imaging. The improved segmentation techniques can aid radiologists, surgeons, and researchers in extracting valuable information from 3D medical images, leading to better diagnoses, treatment planning, and patient outcomes. Additionally, the findings may contribute to the development of automated systems that can assist in real-time segmentation and analysis of 3D medical images, enhancing efficiency and accuracy. In summary, this research aims to enhance the impact and utility of 3D medical images through the implementation of advanced segmentation techniques. The outcomes can have a positive impact on healthcare by improving the interpretation, analysis, and utilization of 3D medical imaging, ultimately leading to improved patient care and outcomes.
