The Computer Aided Prototyping System (CAPS) is a systems engineering tool intended to make the iterative process of software development more efficient. The simplest way to input and modify a CAPS design is through the graphical editor. When a design is modified over and over, the resultant graphical representation can become difficult to comprehend. Trying to change the graphical representation by hand can be very tedious. By adding automatic layout techniques to the graphical editor, this task is made easier for the user of the system. Automatic layout techniques for general graphs that maximize all of the aesthetic characteristics of a graph are not possible. One characteristic may conflict with another. By giving the user multiple layout algorithms that emphasis different characteristics over others, the user may choose between different layouts for the graphical representation. Since CAPS was in the middle of a restructure and no graphical editor was available, automatic layout techniques were investigated using other graphical editors. Graphs with characteristics similar to a CAPS graph were input into the graphical editors and then the layout algorithms applied. The results of this assessment proved that the addition of automatic layout techniques to CAPS would improve performance. The library of layout algorithms will be incorporated into the new graphical editor in CAPS.

The Computer Aided Prototyping System (CAPS) was created to make the software development cycle more efficient. CAPS provides a graphics editor and a syntax-directed editor (SDE) for users to enter prototypes' specifications. The major problem: the user must have a good knowledge of the Prototyping Systems Description Language (PSDL) program syntax in order to use the SDE. Such a requirement imposes a very steep learning curve on a new CAPS user. The challenge was to minimize the time a user needs to spend in order to complete a development without extensive knowledge of other tools like PSDL and SDE. The solution is to redesign and implement a new graphics editor to allow the user to enter all PSDL specifications via the graphics editor with hierarchical pulldown menus. The approach taken was to first determine where to start and what type of language and graphic tools should be used in combination to give the ultimate results. There choices were TAEplus, Motif, and the Idraw from Stanford University. Idraw was chosen because of its design, capabilities, and user friendliness. The major contribution of this thesis is a powerful and user friendly graphics editor to rapidly construct a prototype of a large real-time system. The new CAPS graphic editor has been evaluated by members of the CAPS user group and early feedback shows that the new editor is a truly usable tool. SDE can now take advantage of this graphics editor to enhance the protyping capabilities of CAPS.

The Computer Aided Prototyping System (CAPS) developed at the Computer Science Department, Naval Postgraduate School is an integrated set of tools that is used for rapid prototyping of real time systems. The PSDL editor, a key component of CAPS, allows user to specify prototype design graphically through data flow diagrams and data flow component property menus, and automatically translates the graphical objects into textual specification written in the Prototype System Description Language (PSDL). This thesis builds upon the previous work done on the CAPS editor design and develops an improved Java based graphic/text editor for the PSDL. New functionality is added to increase the user friendliness of the editor and maintain design consistency in real time. The new enhanced editor provides undo/redo and other essential editing functionality, automatic completion of stream types, as well as automatic checking and propagation of the timing constraints. The new editor is more powerful than ever. It tested successfully in the classroom to generate prototypes and has been used as a tool for software engineering graduate students to design their computer aided prototype project.

This thesis focuses on the design and implementation of a new interface editor for the Computer-Aided Prototyping System (CAPS), which de- couples the user interface from the real-time prototype. Using this design, a CAPS user creates a prototype with an interface development tool and a Prototyping System Description Language (PSDL) editor. This real-time prototype executes on two processors using a client/server architecture; the user interface executes on a client, and the real-time PSDL application executes on a server. In addition, this thesis includes demonstrations, with source code, which implement the design. The demonstrations show that Java development tools can be used to create a high-quality user interface for a PSDL application. A socket connection was used to implement the client/server communication. The demonstrations were successful, but the socket programming model is too primitive for the new design. Therefore, a high-level client/server architecture, such as the Common Object Resource Broker Architecture (CORBA), is required for future development of the design.
