Excerpt from Ave Maria, Vol. 2: A Catholic Journal, Devoted to the Honor of the Blessed Virgin; May 5, 1866 But perhaps you will say, this does not ao count for your hard words against us and the Church of England. When I read your late pamphlet I said to myself, have I ever written such hard words as these? I will' not quote them, but truly I do not think that, in any thing I have ever written, I have handled at least any person as you, my dear friend, in your zeal, which I re spect and honor, have treated certain very exalted personages who are opposed to you. But let this pass. It would not excuse me. Even if I were find you in the same condemnation. One of my anonymous censors writes, that in times past I had written violently against t Church of Rome, so now I must do the same against the Church of England. Now I wish he would find, in the books I published, when out the Church, the hard sayings he speaks of. It has been my happiness to know that such do not exist. I feel sure that my accuser had nothing before his mind when he risked this controversial trick. I argued, indeed, against the Catholic and Roman Church, but I do not know of any railing accusations. How I was preserved from 1t I can not tell, except by the same divine goodness which afterward led me into the perfect light of faith. Excerpt from Ave Maria, Vol. 1: A Catholic Journal, Devoted to the Honor of the Blessed Virgin As we have already said, the fortunes of Jesus and Mary, whether in weal or in woe, were one and inseparable. How could it be otherwise? Was she not His clear and devoted Mother? And would she not therefore share to the full in all His joys and in all His sorrows, in all His sufferings and in all His glory, in His Cross and in His Resurrection and Ascension? God the Father had joined them together in the most binding and tender of all relations, that of Mother and Son - of such a Mother and such a Son - and would we wish ever to separate them? And dare man separate what God hath so joined together? From His first Conception in her Virgin womb to His last sigh on the Cross, she was with Him, always His tender and devoted Mother. She gave freely of her own chaste flesh and blood, to form and nourish His infant body; He lived of her life, brcathed of her breath, she fed Him lovingly at her maternal breasts; she watched over His childhood with a mother's tender solicitude and doating interest; she followed Him through the various phases of His eventful life, both private and public. Almost the only preserved record of the first thirty years of His life consists in the simple but significant statement, that He returned to and lived at Nazareth and was subject to her and to Joseph; and when at last His public ministry drew to a close, she stood at the foot of the Cross, drank in His every sigh, felt His every pang, and then and there the sword of grief transpierced her loving heart, according to the prophecy of holy Simeon. Witness now the affecting scene, which occurred while Mary was standing, a monument of maternal grief, at the foot of the Cross. She thought only of her Son, upon whose agonizing face her eyes and her heart were riveted. And did He, the affectionate and dutiful Son, who had so long loved and obeyed her, forget her at that trying moment of His separation from her? No, but He remembered her with His last breath. He had a disciple, whom He loved above all the rest, because, as Saint Jerome says, this disciple having been called to follow Him while a virgin, had ever since preserved His virginal purity unstained. John had been privileged to lean upon His bosom at the Last Supper, and had there been intrusted with secrets not communicated to the others. Turning His loving eyes, now fast closing in death, upon this beloved disciple and still more beloved Mother, Jesus intrusted her to his guardianship, and bade him take her for his own mother. When therefore Jesus had seen His Mother and the disciple whom He loved standing, He saith to His Mother; 'woman, behold thy Son after that, He saith to the disciple; 'bchold thy Mother: -and from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. (st. John xix, 26. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
