La primera parte de sus Novelas amorosas y ejemplares o Decamerón español (Zaragoza, 1637) está formada por diez novelas cortesanas en que analiza los estratos sociales superiores de su época, con visible influencia de Miguel de Cervantes: Aventurarse perdiendo, La burlada Aminta, El castigo de la miseria, La fuerza del amor, El jardín engañoso, El prevenido engañado, La inocencia castigada, El imposible vencido, Al fin se paga todo, El desengañado amado y premio de la virtud.
Del Decamerón de Giovanni Boccaccio toma la fórmula del marco narrativo: la reunión por culpa de una enfermedad (en vez de la peste, unas cuartanas de Lisis) de unos personajes que, a lo largo de cinco noches narran en cada una de ellas dos novelas de gran crudeza.
Le interesan la amenidad narrativa y la descripción psicológica de los personajes y de los ambientes en que se mueven. Además, hay un fuerte componente de denuncia social: su revelación de injusticias indignantes reflejan una fuerte independencia y un recio orgullo femenino, sin ahorrar crudeza en las escenas escabrosas. Además refleja como nadie los efectos demoledores y opresivos de la pasión. En esta primera serie la temática que domina la novela es la burla picaresca y el tremendismo.

Zayas's prose through a gynocentric lens. María de Zayas y Sotomayor published two volumes of novellas, Novelas amorosas y ejemplares [1637] and Desengaños amorosos [1647], which enjoyed immense popularity in her day. She has recently been reinstated as a major figure of the Spanish Golden Age. This study examines Zayas's prose through a gynocentric lens. Drawing on an extensive array of primary and secondary sources, and referring to the ideas of Irigaray, Kristeva, Cixous, Raymond and Genette, O'Brien reflects on the interactions of Zayas's women in such relationships as friendship, sisterhood, and motherhood, analyzing these interactions through the collections as a whole, and connecting the novellas with the frame stories, an aspect of Zayas's writing which has often been overlooked by critics. EAVAN O'BRIEN is a Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at Trinity College Dublin.

An important contribution to the study of women writers. María de Zayas is unique in the seventeenth century as the only Spanish woman to write a collection of exemplary novels whose quality is often compared to Miguel de Cervantes’ masterful works. Her two main collections of short stories, Novelas amorosas y ejemplares and Desengaños amorosos, encompass a social critique based on literary fiction that exposes flaws in the idealized archetypes of masculine identity in early modern Spain. Zayas’s stories redefine women’s patriarchal disadvantage as a tool to expose the ways in which early modern Spanish women could be empowered to counteract men’s discursive and political authority, which they use to unfairly maintain their own social privilege. Xabier Granja Ibarreche explores how Zayas defies Spanish hegemony by manipulating and transforming the ideals of courtly masculinity that had been popularized by conduct manuals and the traits they specified for appropriate noble comportment. In doing so, Zayas elaborates a nonofficial discourse throughout plots that subvert patriarchal hierarchies: she rearticulates the existing ideological order to empower women who are no longer willing to remain silent and oppressed by masculine domination after centuries of failing to attain a sufficiently self-sufficient political position to ascend in the social hierarchy. By inverting the male gaze that assumes masculinity as a preeminent identity, Zayas subverts the patriarchal subject/masculine, object/feminine order and destabilizes manly superiority as a basic universal reality, thereby empowering and unshackling Spanish women to liberate Iberian culture from the repressive and pernicious future she forebodes.
