John a fost introdus în arta navigației încă din cea mai fragedă copilărie, mergând chiar până la practica de a comanda un brc pe lacul proprietății familiei. După cinci ani de studii la Harrow College, în 1810, la vârsta de 17 ani, a trebuit să se angajeze ca ofițer aspirant Trident, comandat de căpitanul Stanbow, un vechi prieten al tatălui său. Caracterul căpitanului, plin de blândețe, este contrabalansat de răutatea secundului, locotenentul Burke care atrage animozitatea echipajului. Ajuns la Constantinopol, John se trezește scufundat în lumea orientală și în excesul ei. Din dragoste și din simțul datoriei, el ajută o tânără să scape de cel care o ținea captivă, dar este pedepsit de Burke pentru că a revenit cu întârziere pe navă. În timp ce își ispășea pedeapsa, John își pregătește răzbunarea împotriva locotenentului care l-a amenințat cu lovirea. John îl ucide pe Burke într-un duel și, pentru a nu condamnat la moarte dezertează și începe un periplu de aventuri extraordinare prin lume.
